lanzi, i do not think american ideas about freedom had their roots in european history. before that time, europe was dominated by kings and religious leaders. about the same time that the colonists in america declared independence from britain (1776), the french overthrew their king in the french revolution. the french used the same type of language (equality, etc) as the americans (although theirs was a secular state that would abolish religion while the american state kept religion for foundation principles). i think the origin of the united states holds great promise that has not been fully realized yet. only through continuing struggle will the american and other world people's be able to acheive their goal. freedom must constantly be defended, not only in other countries, but in america itself.
