You Shop At Goodwill?!? But That's Disgusting!

Except it's not. I've noticed that a lot of people associate shopping at Goodwill with poor and shabby clothing. And it drives me crazy! I shop at Goodwill all the time and they have high quality clothes there. Not all of it, obviously, but it's not all crud. I've found designer labels for five or six bucks. Godowill is a great way to get good deals on awesome clothes. As my dad says 'Rich people donate clothes a lot!'.

I'm always amazed at how stuck-up some people can be. If you buy from cheap or second-hand shops, they sneer at you because they consider themselves superior for only buying what they consider 'quality' products. I have no problem with cheap shops, as they often have the same quality items as other shops... only cheaper! So why pay more for the same things?

I don't associate it with bad clothes b/c I donate a lot of clothes that are in great shape. My mom won't even let me donate anything that's yellowed or even a little grungy looking. I comend you for shopping there, however I still can't. I think about the few times we've gone there looking for items for costumes, and some of them had gross stains! I just can't help thinking "what did this person do in this outfit before donating it?" Even though I know that I donate clean and nice clothes, I'm afraid of getting the one outfit that someone was sick in for 3 weeks and didn't clean real well :P But still, good for you!!

Note: I still love free stuff and I will gladly accept free clothes from friends and family whom I trust.

The quality of the Goodwill stores must vary drastically from town to town. I have heard many people brag about the good stuff they find there,(online) but here in St. Louis they really don't amount to much. There are much better thrift stores.

There really is a difference by location. I've noticed that. There's one in Fairview Heights, IL that has lots of brand new stuff from Target, etc. The one here in Granite City - not so great.

When I was in college, I was at a restaurant after classes when I overheard a woman talking at another table. She was complaining to her companion that since the divorce she was forced to get her clothes at J C Penny. I was wearing my suit from Goodwill at the time. I was working two part time jobs at the time, and going to school -- getting it at Goodwill (or any other such stores) only makes sense.

I love thrift stores. Goodwill are actually really nice stuff. I dont buy clothes a lot at thrift stores. But I do buy other stuff. I dont think its gross to buy at thrift stores. Just wash the clothes. Its not that bad. People shouldnt judge before knowing. I love thrift stores I am sorry that not everyone does!

I love shopping at thrift stores! We don't have a Goodwill here in my town but we had one where I used to live. It was one of my favorite thrift shops because they even had new stuff for sale.

Goodwill stores are my favorite thrift shops. They're clean and well-organized. The stores near me also get lots of stuff from Target, either returns or stuff they can't sell. I've bought lots of home decor and furniture and clothes that still had the tags on or were still in the box!

I love to shop at the Goodwill. We also have a couple of other thrift stores in the area. I go to them all from time to time. I also do yard sales in the summer. Same thing but better prices. =o}

Sometimes people tend to miss the point of Goodwill. They have great prices for those people that can't afford much. Their child can get 2-3 pairs of pants for the cost of one pair at walmart. It's a great way to keep a family clothed at a good price. Another good store is Max 10. All stuff for only $10 or less. That's cool too.

I've shopped at Goodwill, Salvation Army and private thrift stores. I see all kinds of people shopping at these places. Some drive up in exspensive cars, some not. But thrift stores are not what they used to be, they are a popular place to shop now. Your dad is right, wealthy people do donate their clothes a lot, I guess they need the tax deduction. I'm glad they do, b/c I can benefit from it. I buy almost all my clothes at thrift stores.

I love Goodwill! More than half of my clothes have come from Goodwill or the Salvation Army. I've found some major deals there. I also buy sweaters there to unravel and knit with! Sometimes you can find cashmere sweaters in great condition for a dollar or two!

Goodwill is great for books. But my question have you ever shopped at the as is ones. These are the ones they take the stuff that does not sell in the regular store. It is by the pound and can be a trifle dangerous if you get in some of the more hardened combat shoppers

I've bought most of my clothing at thrift stores for the past 10 years. Your dad is right, and not only is he right, but rich people "can't be seen" wearing last year's styles. Whoop-ti-do. I can get good quality men's shirts at Goodwill for $5-6.... that normally run $60-80 at department stores. I don't get the people who think it's "gross" because someone else has worn the clothes before. Did you even lend a shirt to a friend? Was that gross? Yes, Goodwill is a great store.

Your dad is right LOL I buy stuff from Goodwill all the time...I bought almost all the clothes for both my daughters there (didn't have a local Goodwill when my teenager was a baby) and I have found other stuff as well. I bought my baby daughter a Graco Care Center playpen with the bassinet attachment for a mere $18 there while in stores it goes for well over $100. Talk about a savings and it didn't even look like it had been used at all. I buy name brands there such as Osh Kosh, Little Me, Carters, Levi, Lei, Arizona, Tommy Hilfiger--the prices are wonderful and help me to keep my family clothed at a better price.

I was shocked to find out that my local Goodwill carries BRAND NEW "leftovers" from Target. Anything from office supplies to kitchenwares to bedding. Some stuff is still fairly pricey, but you can find some great deals with a little bit of digging.

A lot of people "friends" tell me the same thing. That's disgusting they have been worn before. First of all I do know how to wash clothes, even new ones I but from the department store. Technically, people try on "new clothes" as well so they have been worn. Whatever, I think it's great when they compliment me on something because I say see Goodwill does have cute stuff:)

Goodwill is the best place to scour for nice clothing and sell them for a profit on ebay to people who are too stuck up to go in there themselves. They don't know what they are missing!

I love shopping at Goodwill! Sure, some things MAY be gross, but I just steer clear of them! Really, though, you can find some really unique and great things at Goodwill! I also like buying books there. I LOVE buying books there. And sometimes games or random CDs/Tapes. It's a really fun place!

I agree, though I don't usually buy too many clothes there. There is another thrift store nearby thats even better called mustard seed and they do $5.00 bag sales -- everything you can stuff into a bag for $5.00 great for baby and toddler clothes!!!! They are great for hot wheels cars -- I can sometimes find a bag filled with them for $1.00 for my 4yo.
