Knitting patterns

I've just started knitting again and i've decided to knit some squares that i can turn in to a blanket. so i thought that i would try some different patterns on the squares. Can anyone suggest where i can get patterns for stitches etc.

Hi there, I collect knitting patterns and have patterns created since the 1920's. You will probably find if you go to a jumble sale/garage sale that you will find old patterns lurking somewhere on the stalls. If you know enough you can "lift" a pattern from someone walking in front of you lol. I don't know if it is ethical but I have a couple of jumpers with hijacked stitches in them. You will also find that if you key the word "knitting" into most search engines you will find access to more designs also. In the UK in the 70s we had a part work called Golden Hands and they have a veritable stitch library, so you could also look out for one of those. Good luck with this, as you will have hours of fun. If you do use a very old pattern, remember that the plys and weights of wool were very different then and it was not unusual to get designs in two-ply, very fine real wool. Have fun!

Thanks for that, my mum used to have the golden hands pattern books from years ago. But she has since thrown them away. But i will look out for them again. What are you knitting at the moment?

Well, I still have the golden hands and if you want a short pattern repeat in a certain style I will try to type it in for you! I think their copyright will allow that. I am trying to knit an aran sweater for my partner, in a speckled green yarn, but we are having massive work done in the kitchen, which means most of the kitchen is in the lounge . . . Most of my knitting is confined to thinking about it at the moment I am afraid. I used to knit at home for a company which knitted up designs for famous people, and I knitted some absolutely beautiful designs but unfortunately they were exclusives and they took the patterns back once each garment was completed, sob! You say you have just taken up knitting again, how much had you done previously? You could maybe work out some patterns from your own knowledge, which is probably much greater than you think. It would be really interesting to see the finished squares!

I get the newsletter for lion brand yarn. They have loads of free patterns. www.lionbrand.com

I like the Lion Brand site too. They have a section where they describe all sorts of different stitches. If you are looking at getting a book, you could get a stitch dictionary. These have lots of stitches, as well as useful information about sewing your pieces together.
