The economic growth in China brought with it an increased demand for energy, which impacts on the price of resources and on the environment. There is a debate on NYTimes.com, co-sponsored by Shell, titled "China's Energy Challenge". The Chinese government is making an effort to diversify away from coal, which accounts for 70% of its total energy consumption, but is shying away from difficult policy choices that would hasten this process.
