how do you cope with being nervous on a first date ?

my friend went out on a date, he was totally fine, until the girl came and picked him up
she kept saying he was "soo goodlooking".
however, 20 mins into the date he got BIG TIME NERVOUS
and then returns normal again
the date ended awesome and they made out for 2 hours... during the movie and in the car afterwards
how do you cope with being nervous on a first date ?
