Hi, i need some help and advice. Given that you have $8,000 cash would you get a brand new car and used that as downpayment or settle on pre-owned car? Why brand new or why pre-owned? I hope anyone can help me with this decision.

Only once in my whole life have I ever purchased a new car. Many years ago I read that as soon as you buy a brand new model car the value is dramatically reduced. Since I read that, and confirmed that with friends who sold cars for a living, I changed my thinking. Some of the pricier cars lose 5K in value as soon as it leaves the dealership. (Even if you didn't drive it one mile and tried to sell it the next day, or week, it's still now classified as a 'used' car.) Things to ask yourself and think about are: 1. Is the prestige of having a brand new vehicle worth it? (in the pocketbook where it really counts) 2. When you buy a new car you will be forced to pay full coverage on insurance if you have taken any sort of a loan on it; and you will pay that until it is paid off. 3. The taxes on purchasing a new model will be much higher than on a previously owned car. If buying a used car from a dealership, see if it has the sticker that says it's certified, meaning that it's been checked over and that they will stand behind it after you've purchased it. When I buy a used car, I always look at the records the previous owner kept...did he change his oil regularly, and keep up with maintenance? Lastly, don't be fooled into thinking that if you buy a new vehicle that it will be perfect and there won't be anything wrong with it. I don't know how many times over the years that there have been mass recalls on certain brands because this or that was failing, or a danger. A few years ago, my 83 year old Aunt's brand new Chrysler (very expensive model) left her stranded 3 times in the first month...it took a whole lot of effort to have it declaired a lemon by the factory and have a different one that didn't cause problems. (That and by forcing the head mechanic to drive it for one whole weekend to see...him and his family got stuck out of town and had to be towed before he even believed a brand new car could be so bad!) Search on the internet, or read Consumer Reports (at the library/or web) to see what other's have said about the car you are thinking of buying. Or go into a forum where people discuss their problems with that brand of car (just type in the brand/model of the car and the word forum...you'll be amazed what it will bring up.) Also, the last car I got I paid the $19.95 for that online company to run the vin numbers to see if it had been in any accidents or anything...it was worth it, it totally eliminated one car I was interested in because it had extensive body work that hid it's accident, but nothing can hide a bent frame! Here's a website by Cornell University that explains some too: http://ezra.cornell.edu/posting.php?timestamp=983250000

Wow, that was really helpful, Thank you very much, im planning to buy a toyota RAV4 or the honda CRV but having problems if i settle for pre-owned or b-new. The other side of me is saying go for the bnew since you can really take care of it from start while the other half of me is saying settle for pre-owned cars. Now i dont know what to pick :) maybe it's because im afraid to travel with a used car because i experienced being stranded by one but as you've indicated above, you cannot escape a lemon car once it get's you it will cost more trouble, but none the less i need more inputs :)

Buy a used car that is in good shape. Do not waste all that money on a new car. Cars today are designed to last much longer than cars from the 80's. Cars today can go way past 100,000 miles and still run great.

if ur looking for more in car...better go for good running pre-owned car...check the car well before going for it... or if u feel cost effective car then go for brand new
