Now tough the name is Final Fantasy, but the series are still going on, I wonder what does the word "final" mean if it seems endless?

I actully know the answer to this. When Square first started, they were only a small compnay and they made some really bad selling games in the beggining, so they were basically going bankrupt, and then the idea of Final Fantasy came to mind with them and they named it Final Fantasy becuase it was their "Final Fantasy" as a game making company, their last shot to not go bankrupt... And it was a success so they just kept the name and yeah thats it...

I'm going to take a stab at this. I'm wondering if they used the word "final" in the same context as Ultimate or the Best of the Best. That kind of phrasing would make a little sense that this is the best fantasy out there and just can't be touched. That includes all of the stories (games) they put out. Call it a hunch but that's just my opinion.

It wasn't their last shot to save the company but their last game before ending it. The purpose of the first FF was just to enjoy making it because they would never do another game again. At least that what they thought. So Final mean last at the time. They were already preparing to close down without believing in FF I. The reason they keep the name now is just for people to know that it is the same serie otherwise many would be confuse if it was called something completely different.

Well i guess they kept it to keep the customers from the original game, and also final fantasy has a nice ring to it, sounds good. also It's abbreviation of just FF is catchy too...

its because the first final fantasy was squares last attempt at making a game. so they named it final fantasy, because they didnt expect it to do so well. they thought it would be their last game.
