Does it stand for "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals" as its members claim, or should it be more like "People for Endangerment, Terror and Abuse"? If PETA is so concerned with animals living long and healthy lives, why do they kill so many? Don't get me wrong -- I am ALL ABOUT taking care of animals. I am Secretary on the board of WildRescue -- a non-profit animal rescue and rehab group. But I don't take it nearly as far as PETA does, and I certainly don't condone any of their tactics. IMHO, they give the rest of us a bad name. Why do so many people blindly support such an obviously UNethical group?

I wasn't even aware that PETA was doing this until you posted this discussion. I wasn't quite sure what you were referring to and I searched the internet and found that PETA had killed well over 14,000 animals that they couldn't find homes for. That is so sad. Maybe somebody that knows more about this can explain why. I don't understand it. I support the Humane Society because there is one in my area and I have adopted animals from there and have taken animals there that were abandoned near our house. They've always assured me that they don't kill the animals. I hope that's true.

The Humane Society, as far as I am aware, is not in any way affiliated with PETA. They are a legitimate group working to care for injured, abused and abandoned animals. They should be commended for their work and I highly recommend anyone looking for a good animal charity to start there. PETA on the other hand is a terrorist organization striving toward the "liberation" of animals. Currently there are PETA employees on trial in N.Carolina for "felony animal cruelty." The 14 thousand figure is even more unsettling when you realize that during the same time period the group took in a total of 17,806 animals. That means roughly 80% of all the animals in their care have been killed! Now, as a member of an animal rescue, I completely understand that sometimes animals need to be put down. We have euthanized animals whose wounds or medical conditions were simply too great to heal and who were enduring horrific pain. It hurts me every time it has to be done. But the number we euthanize is somewhere close to 2%, not 80.

Thanks BunGirl. I don't think I've ever made any contributions to Peta and I won't in the future. That is an extremely high rate of animals to be put to sleep. I actually read that in 2005 90% of the animals taken in at the Virginia headquarters were killed. That's insane.

If you think about how many pets are put to sleep in shelters, the number of animals PETA euthanized is low. Unfortunately, there are not homes for every animal. I can't really think of a way to blame that on PETA that there aren't enough homes out there and that there are too many animals. A humane society is rather loosely defined. Some are great, some are horrible places. It depends greatly on the individual one you're speaking of.

That is great that you are secretary of that organization and I bet that you do a great job. I wonder why people kill so many animals myself and I do not like it because I love animals so much and do not like to see animals abused, mistreated or killed. Obviously there are many people who do not care or do not respect animals at all. I hope your group and other groups can do something about the killing of animals.

Well, we don't do much work with endangered species -- mostly we handle rabbits, squirrels, opossums and the like.

I've heard of PETA and i've always heard that they were a good group. I had no idea that they kill animals. Why would they do such a thing? they are contradicting themselves if they really do kill animals.

They also support arson. You'd be amazed at all the things PETA has done in the name of "ethical" treatment.

There members use insulin for there diabetes. Insulin is made from animals. Im not against, people taking care of themselves. I am against people who are so hardcore on animal liberation, and the bombing of animal testing plants.

I may be wrong, but is PETA that group that trashes people with fur? Personally, I don't like wearing fur or leather (except for shoes, maybe) simply because I think we have several materials that perform better in any situation. However, if you are going to go around making your position in an aggressive way, such as PETA does, you can only expect a backlash.

That's when I first discovered how horrible Peta was. I started doing some research and realized what a terrorist organization it is. On a side note, I've seen most of the first three seasons of Penn and tellers bs. I really like the show and it is a real eye opener. I don't necesarrily agree with all of it but most of it I do.

Hi! What I didn't like was those groups throwing paint on people wearing fur. They didn't even bother to find out if it was real or fake. I'm all for animal rights, but I don't believe that demeaning people by splashing them with paint is the way to go about getting the message across!

I agree about the fur. I would NEVER wear the real thing, but I have owned a couple of fakes! I would have been LIVID if one of those nutsos had thrown paint on it!

I think PETA maybe getting out of control. They started out as a great group but now they go to far. They use scare tactics and sometimes threats to get their point across. I think it was PETA that through red paint on people wearing fur coats. lets think about that for a minute. They throw the paint, the coat is ruined. The person is either rich enough to go get it cleaned and no harm done or they go buy a new one. When they buy a new one, more animals are killed and PETA throws red paint on it again and the cycle contiunes. Way to think thinks out PETA.

They've been out of control for years. Throwing paint is not the worst of their issues. They have been implicated in funding arsonists among other things. Now they have felony animal cruelty charges on their hands. They need to be shut down!

Where is PETA killing animals? I think PETA does a good thing by their campaigns raising awareness. However, beyond that, I don't think they do as much. They obviously do a lot of undercover work, which is good. But I think their main thing is to shock people into noticing the issues. And whether you agree or disagree with how they do it, you have got to notice that. How many people do you think would have stopped eating veal if it weren't for PETA? Not as many. Would Petco still have stopped selling large birds if it weren't for PETA? Probably not. I'm actually kind of mad that PETA doesn't do more. I was really upset when they ended their "Petno" (instead of Petco) campaign. Now people can't send them complaints. And there are still animals suffering in those stores. Just not large birds anymore. Which I think were a rather insignificant number of sales anyway. But I understand the group can't do everything. I'm just disappointed in how easily they gave up that particular campaign. I don't volunteer for PETA or donate to them. But I do find that sometimes the radical groups are necessary. Personally, I volunteer with small animal rescues as well as wildlife rehab. So those would be more of animal welfare organizations than radical animal rights groups.

I don't know why people are even taking pets to PETA. I wasn't aware that they even took in surrenders, other than farm animals. Maybe people figure their pet has a better chance at PETA than at the pound. Which it might, I'd need some numbers to look at to figure that one out. The humane society for our area has a 60% kill rate. That means your pet only has a 2 out of 5 chance of even making it out of the shelter alive. Not a pretty number when you think about it. Better to rehome your animals yourself, or better yet, THINK before you bring a pet into your home!

Petcos in Southern CA already do not sell rabbits. Some have rabbit rescues in store, others do not. Another case for you though on Petco. A Colorado guinea pig rescue was supplying many Petco's with guinea pigs. Unfortunately, Petco required the animals live in the cramped quarters the store provided. But still, the group went on with it. Then suddenly, Petco said no more and they are back to pet mill animals. Just for uniformity. Umm, great! I think PETA doesn't do the whole job on anything though. Their crazy antics start people thinking about the issues and then other groups take over and actually go about helping. But without PETA, many people would not be aware of the issues. So I believe that radical groups do have a role. They make people aware. And they do it much faster, it's not such a gradual change when a group with so much publicity does it. Now the rabbits in Petco thing, that took YEARS out here!

There are better ways. Case in point: PetCo. Here in Texas, most PetCo stores still carry live animals in their stores. The rescue group I am involved with is changing that one store at a time. We are about to launch a brand new program, with PetCo's aid. There will still be rabbits in the five stores we are working with. The difference is they will be OUR rabbits. We will be checking in to make sure they are fed and cared for and healthy. We will also be screening adoptions. They will be there in the store on display to generate interest and the store will still get the revenue of all the related sales after adoption. But we didn't have to bomb, burn, or cause a riot for this to happen. It was all done through amicable phone calls to the PetCo home office!

I just wrote a hugh reply it went missing so if two post I am sorry I don't support PETA I also don't support the HSUS because they are against the owner ship of domestic animals .I want support any organazation that is for taking my rights away as a pet owner .I am all for animal well fare which is almost the same as animal rights both agree that animals shouldrecieve proper food water housing and care .Animal warefare is not against animals being used as food just that they should be kept in humane condictions while alive and thier life should end in a as painless way as posible . They are also not against places like sea world or zoos as long as the animals needs are looked after . I am not against the resouncible breeding of pure breed pets either but I also highly support altering of pets only people who are wanting to improve the breed should do so who are willing to test the animals for health issues and screen the new owners and require that the pet quilty ones be altered . I hope every one supports local no kill shelters and rescues .I also hope they research and not help people that wish to take away our rights as pet owners . thank you

they support them because they are uneducated...they hear peta and think, oh animals, ok...that's about it..they fail to research the group...peta is just a bunch of flashy, news mongers..they may have an agenda, but it's not about animals...it's about raising public awarness as to what they percieve as cruelty..it's all about them, what they percieve..

I don't know what PETA stands for exactly. But I think they are trying to get the vote for animals. They do go overboard with some of there ideas. I have been trying to get my cats on Medicare and Social Security...because animals are people too. Good to hear you are Secretary of WildRescue. But , I think it is people who need rescuing. I would never support PETA...but would support your group.

Welcome to the world of obviously skewed and ridiculous causes. You're right, the only thing more ridiculous than their dogma is the hypocritical way in which they practice it. Yeah, don't hunt and eat animals, but it's okay to mow them down with a combine in order to get grain and crops for eating. Self-righteous? Just a tad.
