Do you know your neighbor or your friend?

I have a neighbor from down the street who I know a little. He used to work at our local grocery store, I used to talk to him at local sport games and the like.... never actually hung out together. He went through some tough times 18 months ago when his father died unexpectantly and his mother then suffered a nervous breakdown. He is in his mid-30's.
So today I hear from a friend that he will be moving shortly - to the State Penitentiary. It seems he accepted a plea deal. The charge is molesting a little girl, about age 10.
I was alternately enraged, saddened and disgusted. I really do not have any tolerance for anyone who would hurt our children and personally, don't think the 3 years he received is near enough, if he is truely guilty.
The few people I have talked to about this all had no idea he was like this. I am not naiive, but this stuff really hits home when it is so close. I think we really do not know our neighbors as well as we think we may, particularly if they are not close friends.
Anyone else with similar occurances? In the end, who can you trust? Even family is a crap shoot if we go by what gets reported in the papers. Right now, I'm looking sideways at everybody.
