Humans need to sleep because just like any machine, humans need rest too. During our sleep, our internal organs like the heart, kidney, brain and liver don't have to work as much as when we are awake. This also gives time for the brain to convert the things that happened during the day into permanent or long-time memories. That's why lack of sleep will lead to poor memory.
