people often say "forgive and forget", can we truly forget?

how do you understand the word forget here? does it mean to erase from our mind? what is it then? or it doesn't really mean anything, just empty words without real meaning.

it's easier to forgive but forget? no sir, i don't think so. you see, forgiving doesn't take a lot of effort. it's so easy to say i forgive you, right? forgetting is a different matter. if you come to think of it, you don't really forget everything that happened to you. specially the bad ones. the ones that teaches you lessons and the ones that hurt you the most. you can't forget these, right?

That't what I think so too. How can people forget things? Unbelievable. One can hardly forget an incident in his childhood, let alone forget the hurt in adulthood. Maybe forget here means: to remember the act done and tell yourself that you are not going to hold that matter against that person anymore. Because forgetting as erasing from our memories, that's just impossible!
