WHY search engine optimisation

I started my website http://one.planx.uni.cc/forum and I was wondering does search engine optimisation really help? I know that it will help increase the traffic, but will it increase your sales or advertising revenue? Do web directories help a lot?

Yes, it does.
But I would recommend white hat SEO, not black hat. It's safer.
And don't expect result over night, for a good EO job you gotta wait at least 2-3-4 months, but you know the results will last a long time.
