an optical mouse is composed by a red light or a laser light that is pointed on the ground where mouse go on and a light sensor that takes little pictures of the surface. Sensor see the light that goes on the surface and get back to it and compare those pictures to previous ones, so it can see if you are moving and in what direction you are moving your mouse. DPI rating is an acronym for Dot Per Inch. Cheap mice and office mice are 800DPI to 1200. Gamers need more DPI mice. It's very difficult to use a mouse with high DPI number, because they have an high resolution sensor, and for less mouse movement, you see big pointer movements on the screen! They are ok for games or for people who need more precision and maybe who use photoshop. But you need to learn how to use them...this is not so easy. I have a logitech optical mouse...it's a 800dpi resolution..but I don't use it and even when I play games I don't need it..
