How to make backup copies of DVD's if they are copyrighted??

my mom wants to make backup disks of her dvd's, if they are copyrighted can they be copied still??

I have a xcopy disk it seems to copy pretty much everything

Well I have never tried to copy a copyrighted dvd since I think it is wrong to copy copyrighted dvds
