Hi,Has anyone else here tried training their cat to do its business in the toilet! Yes - I mean the toilet, like the cat from "Meet the fockers"! I bought a 'litter kwitter' device which helps with the process and trains the cat to go on top of the toilet and gradually works its way towards just sitting over the edge of the seat. Quite amazing but it actually works. Heres a picture of my cat when he was still a kitten getting used to the litter kwitter!

I do not think that i would like my cat using the same toilet that i use. I mean there has to be some germ issues there. If you work during the day then just think what you will get to come home to every evening. I think that i will just stick with my litter box

Where do you find a litter kwitter? And can you teach an adult cat?

I bought mine from Kmart, it was about AUS$99 I think, but they are cheaper now, around 80bucks or so. Also you can buy them on ebay for quite a bit less second hand. And then when your cat is trained just sell it on again. I expect an adult cat would have no problems with it, it depends on the nature of your cat, some take to it real fast, others struggle. I think it is the instinctive need to scratch and cover it up that they find hardest to lose. I know ours does, but they work out that when it goes in the water that covers the smell. It helps if you flush the loo as soon as they finish whilst they are still standing on it, that way the realise whats going on. Our cat has even jumped up on the cistern afterwards and stuck his paw on the flush button a few times from watching me do it! But he's not strong enough / heavy enough to push the button. They are clever aninimals though and they work things out fast - doesn't always mean they will play ball though even though they know what you want them to do!

My cat is a genius! One night I sat down on the toilet without turning on the light, and the cat had gotten there first. When I stood up and turned on the light, Shakti was USING the toilet. LOL

I did try this back in the 80's when they first came out. My cats hated it and started to go "around the house" so the litter box came back and we were all happy.

Yeah, at first our cat took to it no worries, but there are 4 stages, first there is a red bowl that sits inside the top of the seat attachment, which is just like a normal litter tray, he had no probs with this. Then there is an orange insert which replaces the red one, which has a small hole in the middle, but is surrounded by a ring of litter - they are supposed to learn to go in the hole and the litter is there to stop it from being a big change. When we put this on he would freak out a bit and always stick his head down the hole and put his paws in the water but eventually we got him to go by covering up the hole with some hard plastic sheeting that you use for the front of book binders. Then we'd put a small hole in it and gradually make it bigger until he would go with just the standard orange insert. This worked and eventually he was fine with it. Now we are on the 'green' insert which is like the orange but with a much bigger hole, and we did the same thing by covering the hole with plastic sheeting to get his confidence slowly and everyday we make the hole bigger. Its really funny hearing him go and hearing the sound of stuff falling through the hole into the toilet!! :-) Its much better than the litter tray though, i hate those things they stink and the cat gets it all over his feet. He only had one for the first 2 weeks as a kitten then it was gone! Gets some strange looks from visitors though, but soon he will just use the standard toilet seat.

I knew someone that once used a seat like the hospital uses to collect specimens in. lol She just put it under the lid and filled it with litter. After awhile she just took that out and the cat used the toilet. Although the cat did get a big surprise when she tried to cover it up and got her paw wet. But the cat still uses the toilet now instead of a litter box.

I did it the same way you did. This was about 6 years ago. Only one of my cats was trainable and then one day she was up there on the toilet taking a piss and she fell in. I saw it and it was the funniest thing youve ever seen, but she never went up there again. EVER.
