Ever wonder why when you answer the phone in the middle of the night or while you are sleeping that the party on the other end will ask "Are You Sleeping" and in our sleepiess voice we say "No, we were not sleeping at 3:00 am in the morning" ... ever wonder why we say that ??

I wouldn't say that. If somebody phoned me and woke me from my sleep with that question, I would reply... "I was, until the phone woke me up. Do you have an urgent problem?" lol. I always have my mobile phone beside my pillow when sleeping... just in case there is an emergency of any kind. Why don't we just turn them off? lol

when I get that type of phone call at that time I first say hello to find out who it is. both my parents are in there 70's and my wife's parrents are in there 60's they could call due to the emergency. if a friend calls i say what the F&*k you want.

it will have to depend on whether i want to talk to the other person or not...if it's my bf/best friends, i will tell them that i'm still awake...but if it's someone that i just wanna get off the phone quick, i will tell them im sleeping and hope they get the message. if someone calls me in the middle of the night, it must be serious, i will always try to add with 'yes, im sleeping now, but everything ok?'

I don't say that anymore because I know my voice is lying no matter how hard I am concentrating. My mother would do call me often just when I was finally able to get to sleep and then ask me if I were sleeping. LOL As if anyone can not tell by the sound of your voice if they truly know you. ha ha So now, I admit that I was sleeping and will tell the person that its ok because I am awake now. What bothers me after that is when the other person will say that they will let me go if I want to go back to sleep. What? Really? So, that would mean after I hang up, I will be left wondering why you called me at such an hour and not be able to sleep anyways??? No way! For the better sake of me getting back to sleep when I get off the phone, that person better tell me the point of calling. And please don't tell me that you called just because you wanted to talk. You woke me up for a reason, so please do not add to the insult by not telling me because you woke me. LOL

Its is uncommon that we receive some phone call during those odd hours. Even if we get, it may be to wish "Happy New Year" or "Happy Birthday". If we are talking on the phone, how can we say that we are sleeping? So we often say that we are not sleeping at any point of time.

Usually when my phone rings at this time of the morning it has been an emergency of some sort and I immediately go into panic mode. I've been woken up for family members that have passed away and friends in a serious crisis. I usually stay up late at night and on the rare occasion that I go to bed early and someone calls and wakes me up when they ask in amazement "Are you sleeping?" I say "yes-something wrong" and when they "no-just calling to visit" I get off the phone and curl back into bed. I think the reason we say "no, I'm not sleeping" is because somewhere in the back of our mind we are wondering "hey, why are you calling?"
