Lost Children

My father was in the military during the Vietnam war, after his tour of duty but before his discharge from the military he was stationed in Homburg Germany. During his time in Homburg he fathered 2 children with a German lady, a boy and a girl. This is all common knowledge in my family. They say that this German lady used to write to him and send pictures from time to time over the years. I would like to meet these siblings but when ever I ask my father about it he refuse's to talk about it. I'm 41 and not getting any younger, should I attempt to locate them on my own or should I just let sleeping dogs lay and forget all about it ?
