Why only men are left to die in such situation?

Why is it that whenever there is a plane hijack or people kidnapped, the government always asks to release the females and children first. Aren't men important?

but still if i was in that situation i would rater, woman and children were given up, pluss we cannot hold babys, and it could just be a good gesture,,:]
