What is your take on Bariatric surgeries like the gastric bypass, and the lap band? Do you know someone who has had either of these procedures performed on them? Would you consider one of them to loose weight?

My sister had this surgery in October of 2005 and has lost over 140 pounds. She was overweight all of her life and had tried many diets. I really think this surgery should be considered only after every other means of losing weight have been exhausted. She look great and feels so much better, but it's definitely not a "quick-fix" solution. She'll always have to be very careful about what and how much she eats.

That is what my mother in law has to do. She had her bypass done about four years ago and in her case the doctor went a little nuts on how much he took out. Now she is having problems keeping her blood sugar up. Her memory is shot. We all worry about her being out on the farm and something happening, with no one around.

I think for people who have exhausted every other option in weightloss that bariatric surgery is a very good choice! I had a Fobi Pouch Gastric Bypass on May 22, 2006 and it was the best decision I could have made for myself. I weighed 265, had been fighting my weight since I was around 10 years old and had been battling hypertension for over a year. Since surgery my blood pressure has been fine, no more pills for me!! I have also lost 102 pounds and have about 28 more to go. I only wish I had been able to do it earlier. Don't get me wrong, it's not the easy way out that many people think it is. It is a major life change, you have to watch what you eat all the time, one bite too much and you feel awful, too much sugar and some of us have what is called "dumping syndrome" where your heart races, and you can feel very nauseous (among other symptoms). The benefits far out weigh the downfalls though. Most post-ops get their health, and life back. I have many friends who have gotten rid of their hypertension and diabetes as a result of losing the weight. It's also so nice to be treated normal by others and not always feel like they are judging you, because we all know it happens. As it was explained to me, most people who have a lot of weight to lose can do it with diet and exercise, but a huge% of them will regain and gain more than they started out at. It's not all about lack of will power, it's about genetics! Being obese isn't a choice it's a disease. I'd say if you are interested in it, research it. Look up everything you can on fobi pouch, gastric bypass, lap band, and duodenal switch. If you have anymore questions, I'd be happy to try to answer them for you. I also have a great website that I'll give you the link to if you'd like!

I would appreciate the link. My wife and I am trying the lifestyle change right now. I am just afraid that it isn't going to work. My hope are high that it will work, but the surgeries are a back up plan if nothing else works. I just hope she doesn't end up like her mother.
