Name change after marriage?

Should a woman keep her own name after marriage? I know in some cultures women always keep their own name but in Western society it was the custom for a long time to take the husband's name. I notice that in the past few years more and more women opt to keep their own names. I am really happy about this. How do you feel?

I know that a woman has a right to keep her own name, but when two people become married they become one person, no longer two people. It just seems appropriate to me therefore that the couple share a last name. Also, having different last names might cause problems with picking up children at school, doctor records, immigration, etc.

from a man's point of view : i totally agree with keeping the name...it give's a person the "identity" from what it came...As i am bearing both my parent names...so will my kids do.Easier to "track down" family in that way.Don't beleive in woman "enslaved" by the man with the name...it's an option.

I can understand why women would want to keep own name. It's their identity that they're preserving and taking the man's name may be seen as subjugating to him. however what do you call your kids?

I got married two months ago... It was kind of weird for me, since on the culture where I come from, we don't change our last names, we keep on adding last names instead. And I like that. I have a huge name now: two names, a compound last name and my husband's last name... I didn't change my last name into my husband's because it feels weird. I love to be called Mrs xxx, but it feels weird to keep my name and "erase" my last name.
