Anti-Depressants Do They Work For You?

When I was diagnosed as having depression back in 2003 I was given different courses of anti-depressants, all of which gave me bad side-affects, like nightmares, sweating, recalling past events, flashbacks, weight gain and bad mood swings. I tried different types of anti-depressants none of which worked, they exacerbated the situation. The trouble is with anti-depressants, they are like a plaster which you put over an open wound, the plaster protects you from the wound, but as soon as you stop taking anti-depressants the plaster comes off and guess what, the wound is still there. You are only putting off the route cause of your depression. The only way to beat depression is the right counseling and support from loved ones and for me going to the gym helped me a great deal. I still have bouts of depression but certainly not as bad as it used to be.

i think they do help really well for me. i have been diagnosed with depression since 2002 or somewhere close to that time. i have been on a few anti-depressants and i found one that work for me. it's lexapro. it has calmed be down and keeps me in check when i get mad or upset. i have gotten counseling and have support from my family and boyfriend but it still hasnt got me over this. i will probably be on anti-depressants for the rest of my life. tanning in a tanning bed helps take a lot of tension and stress off my head for 20 minutes a day. but the lexapro is a great solution for me.

Most anti-depressants did they same for me, making more trouble. Unfortunately life can become depressing. You are right it is just a band-aid solution, we need to delve further and heal. Most people are depressed because life is not going how we want. It rarely does. I have suffered depression most of my adult life and i am 38 this year. I tried many anti-depressant and you have to stay on them for 3-4 months before if starts to take affect. I also suffer from severe IBS, which was the main cause of my depression. but only one antidepressant helped me and only with the IBS, which in turn helped me with my depression. I believe you need to have dreams and follow your dreams. No matter how wild or ludicrous they seem. Without a dream or direction we just wander thru life and it is dreary and depressing. Exercise is a very important part - so it is great that you are going to the gym. If you feel good outside then it you will feel good inside too.

Like yourself I have also tried many different sorts of anti depressants, some good and some bad, but I also found by excersise it made me feel better. Being on lithium has been what has caused my thyroid problems, now like yourself I will be taking medication for life. Like all medication they have their upside and also a downside. I just think people are not as aware of side effects as they shuld be.

I've often wondered if the anti-depressants combined with my thyroxine that I take had a detrimental affect, but then the doc would have known that. Even having thyroid problems has a lot of side affects as you know yourself.

No .. they didn't help me at all ... Let me set the scene .. successful job earning £22k in 1992 and just about to be promoted with even better earnings .. just bought a new home and still had the debt to pay off ... just ended a long term relationship ... When .. whammo .. I had an accident at work .. my exisiting disabilities were worsened .. and I was out on my ear .. from £22k to £4k in one week ... still got the new home to pay for and still lamenting a lost love ... When ... zammo .. not surprisingly I hurtled into a physical and mental breakdown .. I had the old Black Dog practically sitting on my shoulder, panting in my ear ... I went to the docs and was given anti-depressants .. my black mood lurched from the depths of despair .. to deep into the black hole of the Abyss ... streuth and they were supposed to help ... After just one week I stopped taking them .. gave myself a good talking to ... went slightly mad for a few weeks .. and then slowly pulled myself back out of the Abyss and marched slowly back towards the light ... I was never offered counselling .. and I never let anyone know what was happening .. all self healing .. mind you for all I know I could still be depressed .. but if I am then I am really quite content ...

Sometimes if you are offered or take counseling it still isn't the answer, I had counseling and it managed to open up old wounds.

absolutely agree with it . in case of depression or in order to come out no medication can work . its you and only you who can make yourself come out of the trouble . think big and think fast . i know its tough but think what enormous oppurtunities awaits you . think that you have nothing to loose and it can only get better . and as we all know nothing lasts for ever not even the cold november rain . wish you all who are depressed in life a quick and happy recovery .

well that depends of the kind of anti-depressants you took! i think some are to strong! anti-depressants work, they help us forget the problems and specially they don't let you think about it, because they took your ansiety and let you sleep...if a person with a depression don't take pills i think she will never be good! she has to be strong and live her life and after a while stop taking pills, because sometimes became vicious...

Counseling can be expensive, the free counseling sessions have a lengthy waiting list in this country. Thank you for your response.

I got lucky, they put me on zoloft and the only side effects I had were stomach ailments and not sleeping right. 2 weeks it took me to get used to it. The zoloft helps my temper as well as my depression, but I do agree, when you go off them, they can make me feel so upset and angry to even be awake. I have discovered that keeping myself busy helps my depression and gives me less time to brood.

I think also that this time of the year is the worst for depression, and SAD sets in for some. If you're mind is occupied and kept busy then it does help to cope with depression.

I was put on Prozac and didn't have any bad side effects at all, they really did work for me in that they lifted me out of my depression. I went off them myself, it wasn't that hard getting off them. I was never offered, nor did I have any counselling. Counselling does not attract me at all.

Mines didn't help me. I think it made it worse. My anxiety medication works though. Going to the gym is a real good thing. I heard that helps!

My husband suffers from depression and has for over 10 yrs. Over all that time he has been put on most every kind of antidepressant that has ever been made. A couple seemed to work for a little while but then his depression would return twice as bad. There were those that didn't have any affect good or bad. But most just made his depression worse. We have found that keeping him busy helps more then anything. Keep you head up and your hands busy :-)

Yes i am young but i had depression and i was also diagnosed with panic/anxiety diorder. i was put on a medication but the thing about it was things that happend that should have bothered me never did....big things. i hated it. i referred to them as my artaficial happy pills. The thing that helped me was pretty much working out a bit, also i got a notebook and started writing down pretty much everything, especially things that were bothering me, and luckily i found someone i could confide in and who wouldlnt judge me.

It depends, because sometimes depression is caused by chemical imbalance. Ive been on Cymbalta for almost 3 months now and it has helped me a bit. I feel more calm and relaxed and I dont cry over every little thing now. Im glad I decided to get help with my depression. Im going to counseling as well.

i must tell you that anti-depressants worked well for me.i dont follow a course but i was suggested that whenever i feel sad depressed or anxious i must take them.it helps me.i sometime take alprazolam025-.05mg.or clonazepam 0.5mg or diazepam 4mg whichever i find nearby my hand.they work well.i take them whenever i need them but not regularly.i was detected with secondary hypertension 4 years ago.i was prescribed atenolol50mg once daily for the rest of my life.but after taking them for 3years i gave up and now i am better than i was 4 years back.so sometimes you do need them.but nothing compares the benefit if you can get over your depression by natural ways.thanks
