going back there

United States

I am now in the US together with my family, but we have no option except to go back to the Phil. due to complicated reason. I am afraid to go back there specially when I see news about what's happening there. I don't have much savings which adds up to my worries. My 2 kids will go to college soon. It' hard to get a job there expecially if you are in your 40's. They say best option is to have a business. But what kind of business? I am a good cook, and I love sewing. I love interior decorating. My friends says I am talented, but I don't know how to start using my talent for business. Business in the Philippines is very competitive since jobs are so scarce. Could someone advise me what to do?

News sometime are made exaggerated to make an impact. The only thing that's not good here is the politics. Everything else is fine and a good place to stay. There are still a lot of jobs that hire people even at your age. Call centers and other outsourcing companies for example don't take age as a gauge for employment. I guess if you can do both (have a business and have a fulltime job) at the same time, the better.

Yes, I agree with you that call center agents are very in demand here in the Philippines, no matter what age you are in. There are call centers that offer parttime employment but usually these are night shifts.

If you know howto cook and you love what you are doing, then I say put up a restaurant. Put it up near schools and offices so that you would have sure buyers of your food. Location is a major factor for a business to succeed plus your passion for it. If you don't want to put up a business, then apply in a call center, dont worry it's not shamefull to work in a call center at your age coz there are lots of people your age who work in a call center parttime. If you have lived in the US long enough, you'll probably have that twang they are looking for in a call center. Dont believe everything in the news. They are just exaggerations . One's success is not attributable to the politics or economy of the country alone. They are just contributing factors. YOUR successis all up to you.

well, i think putting up a restaurant is best for u since u r a good cook. and life here in philippines is very much boring. high prices, low income, unstale job or worst out of job. plus corrupt government officials from president down the line. if i were u i would'nt go back here. it's hell on earth here. hope i may heve warned u a little bit or may have prepared u for coming back here. have a pleasant day!!!

If we could only stay here for good, i would choose to be here. but there are things beyond our wishes. We have no option but to go back. That's why I am scared, but I have to face reality. I am scared not for myself but for my two kids, I want them to have a better future.

Welcome back to the Philippines. If you are creative and talented with making crafts, try to make some sample and post it in the net, like ebay or multiply. That way potential customers will be able to see your work.

Welcome back to the Philippines. Philippines is good. As you know, Philippines has mane islands and provinces. Maybe in the news you heard only the philippines but the question is which part of the country. What I am trying to say is that, you should not be afraid of what is happening in the country because it may be true only in a certain part of the country. The rest is goods news, peaceful and progressive area. The best you can do in coming back here is to do a business. If you have the skills and talents the better. You can focus on businesses that requires your talent and skills that requires your service. Like you you are good in cooking then you can do the catering. This will not require much capital since you don't have to purchase inventories for stocks. You will buy only if you have clients. You can use also the internet to gain filipino friends and be your future clients in your business. Good luck.

thank you for the positive input. I left Philippines 6 years ago only and we are not that bad when we were there. Its just that when we arrived here in US my kids were like 10 and 13 and they adjusted very quickly because of the clean environment, places are accessible, schools are great,I feel secured here for my kids. I don't earn that much here but we can buy what we like. I guess these are some of the reason why I'm scared to go back. I love Philippines I just wish that our political problems will be resolved so that our economy will go much further like other asian neigbor countries. I can feel that you are optimistic, and i admire people like you. thanks again for the enlightenment.

where are you from here in the philippines? i'm from naga city, bicol and ive been here for more than 28 years and i haven't experienced or heard any bad news that would scare me to leave here. maybe you should pinpoint on where you're going back to and check the statistics there, i think almost all cities have their own website, and forums for you to check out. also news reports only bad things that happened, which is sometimes incidental, but they rarely reports something good happening 'coz there is nothing to report on it. :) good luck on your comeback. i would also suggest you work in another country if you can't do business on your own, so that your kids can finish their studies here, and help you make a good business here and have a brighter future.

Life in here in the Philippines is really hard. But with all the support that you get from families and friends, everything will alright. Entreprenuership is being pushed by the goverment to those who would want to settle here for good. There are various sites in the internet that would give you ideas on how to start a business. And I am recommending this one, this is actually blog, entrepinoys.blogspot.com. I found this spot very informative. Good luck to you and your family.

With your talents, you could make it big in the Philippines. Just start doing networking with friends and tell them of your plans. Filipinos love to eat so you putting up a restaurant or just even target the masa with a carenderia, you can start earning. With sewing, it depends if you will live in Manila or Cebu where people earn more and can afford to have their own dressmaker for the latest fashion. Same thing with interior decorating, big city more opportunity to earn. If you will still be staying here in the US, why don't do you try buying stuff and then sending it in the Phil and you can start a business like that. Just do cash basis coz majority are notorious for not paying their credit. Or...buy baking stuff here in the US and you can start baking at home...then contacting these stores so you can put your items there. Or you can put it on the school cafeteria. Start simple like butterscotch, brownies..longer shelf life so lesser capital to put up. Also, if you know anybody who holds a good position in a university, you can start with contacting them see if you can get the contract to provide them with t-shirts for intramurals, founder's day etc. There are always activities in school where the students got no choice but to get some kind of t-shirts. With thousand of students, you can earn money on it too. Having an internet cafe still makes money especially if the area where you will be is not that congested yet with cafes. It is a daily income with just the maintenance of the cafe will be your major expenses. Offer services for students, professionals and computer tutorials...you know Filipinos, the more service they can get from a place, they will have its loyalty. Anyways...those are just some of the ideas I can share with you. But you know what, we can survive anywhere. Filipinos are good at that. Whatever situations coming our way, we always emerge at the top. Goodluck with everything and God bless.
