Bill Cowher's Retirement

United States

It's the end of an era. He was like something out of central casting, I could just imagine him with a lunch box going to work @ the steel mill.As much as I hate to see him go, I'm glad he's doing it when he's on top. Has anyone noticed how many coaches have had heart problems? I've only know two coaches in my life :Cowher and coach Chuck. It'll be hard for me to see another guy on the sidelines, but that's life! What do you think?

He will be missed but I don't think the team will suffer because of it. The roster is still every bit as good as the team that won the Super Bowl and there's plenty of candidates that will be a good fit for the job. Personally I think that it will end up being Russ Grimm that takes over. Whisenhunt will probably end up in Atlanta where he used to play ball and he can combine his trick plays and Michael Vick. But Russ Grimm is an old lineman and a smash-mouth kinda guy which will be a good fit for the team...plus he even has a Cowher-esque mustache.

I like that mustache reference! I had not thought of the Whisenhunt-Atlanta connection. Good point. I hope it is Russ.I can't see someone from outside the organization coming in. Somehow, I think that might affect the continuity. On that note, have you heard anything about Hartings? The center position is crutial to the O-line. There's only been like three in the last 30 years...And what about special teams? No game breaking threat since Randel El. Santonio muffed several punt returns. It makes you wonder. Then there's Ben. Do you think his issues were in his head, or some residual affects of all the drama of the accident and surgery?

I'm not worried about Ben. Every now and then he gets a little reckless and tries to force something and ends up with a stupid interception, but he's still the guy for the job. It's not just Hartings that I'm worried about on the O-Line. We've got some big lineman, but we keep bringing in younger players and we're just not creating holes like we used to. I'd love to see the Steelers get a big time left tackle, like Walter Jones or Jonathon Ogden, to pair with Faneca to create the best left side in the NFL. Santonio was never meant to be back there for punts. Willie Reid was drafted solely as a return specialist and he was injured the entire season.

I'm not sure that I understand why he's leaving now. He only has one year left on his contract, why not finish it out. I know he wants to spend more time with his family, but they've waited this long, what's one more year.

Thats the way that it works in the NFL. If he went into next year without a contract , it would be too much of a distraction. Plus. it would'nt be fair to the organization. You can't wait 'til your contract expires to declare wether you stay or go .Imagine if you were the owner. You'd be up a creek, if the guy decided to leave & youhave no replacement. That's why they always have to extend the contract before it expires or leave. It's hard, but fair.

I totally agree- I think it will be so odd watching the games next year without Coach Cowher on the sidelines.. Watching his angry faces even when they had a good play was alot of fun... He was a heck of a coah and it will be sad to see him go- Like he said.. You can take a man out of Pittsburgh but you cant take Pittsburgh out of the man.. He will be a Steeler forever! I wish him luck! Lets just hope that Big Ben doesn't do something crazy during the offseason again! I think he has learned from his mistakes. Anyone watching Plaxico tonight??

Parcells with heart problems , Vermeil with burnout , Gibbs with Nascar . What do they all have in common ? ---they all came back lol . I'm sure Cowher will have the Coaching bug after about a year or two off . For your sake, i hope its with your Steelers, but he can call his own shots for sure --good luck , coming from a Giants fan

Why is the icon for the this topic a baseball? Anywho, I was relieved to se that Bobby Petrino got the Atlanta Falcons job. It's a blow to Louisville and I hate to see the Big East take a step back because they're finally earning some respect in the BCS. I'm just glad that one of our biggest competitors to get Ken Whisenhunt as head coach is out of the way
