Godmother Query

Does a baptism have to occur in order to be a godmother? Are there any legal papers required to confirm who is a godmother? Or does a verbal agreement suffice? Can this be renigged? That is, can someone be a godmother, then have a falling out with the parent and then be told they are not a godmother unless they have paperwork to prove it? Any advice would be appreciated.

Being a Godparent is a voluntary thing and is really to say that you will look after the child's spiritual needs should the parents be unable to do so. Yes, as far as I know there has to be a Baptism to have a Godparent and no I don't think there are any legal papers. However when a person is Baptised there is usually a Certificate issued to the child/parents and the Godparents would be noted on that. If in doubt, check with the Church where the child was baptised. Good luck. :)
