I have just finished watching the last of 4 films in a DVD box set of Bogart (Key Largo, Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, Big Sleep) that I received for Xmas, and thoroughly enjoyed every second of it.
It was however tinged with a little sadness when we considered the current output of English language films (not just Hollywood), and it dawned on us that very few of those great actors would even get a look in at a casting session today. It seems that Humph, Peter Lorre & Sidney Greenstreet would all be deemed too ugly to fit a modern film, where far too often, an actors appearance is far more important than their ability.
Do you believe this to be true, or am I just becoming old and cynical? I hope it's the latter, because I hope we will once again see the rise of the great actor, and stars who are worthy of such a status.
