the immortal teen

Lately I've noticed how a lot of teenagers in my community seem to think they are above the law and they can not be hurt. There has been a huge increase in drunk driving and drug use amongst the High School Students in our small town. These kids are the ones who graduated from the "D.A.R.E." program in middle school. Every weekend these kids are going out to drink somewhere and nothing can stop them. They go to parties, drink, and then continue to drive home. They think that they can't crash. Our police force caught one student a few weeks ago driving drunk, with an open container in the car. The same week another kid killed his passenger and was charged with manslaughter. No matter what is put on television commercials about not to drink and drive, they will continue to do it themselves until they are caught or (which hopefully doesn't happen) they crash. What will teach kids that what they do is not safe for them or anyone they drive past. What could possibly be done to show these children that they are indeed children and not old enough to be drinking let alone driving? We have basically given up all hope around here and are praying that the police catch them before they can kill anyone else or themselves. The school officials know who drinks and drives yet they don't do anything about it. They hear all the rumors, and we need them to step up and take action before they hurt someone. I don't know if this is just a phase for high school students but it is a danger to us all

The way I see it, it's also the fault of the community in general. First, parents can't discipline their kids. They don't care whether or not these kids are too young or not. Why should they give cars to high school students if they expect these 'kids' to act maturely? Second, where do they buy these stuff? Isn't it regulated that under-aged minors can't buy these? or Isn't bars regulated not to serve drinks to minor? Third, the police themselves can't control these people. Fourth, I think the community tolerates it, that's why they go out doing everything they want. Actually, you can't do anything about it because it's 'culture'. Plus these aren't your kids. If only parents could discipline their own kids. You could only warn your family or discipline your kids.

There are two issues. First of all, it's not unusual for people to get to the ripe old age of 65 or 70 before they become aware of their own mortality. That's when their friends start dying of 'natural' causes. Second, the behavior you describe is a demonstration of rebellion and lack of respect for rules in general. Sad and stupid, but not uncommon. Most of them will grow out of it if they survive.
