Why has soccer (football) neer really caught on in the US ?

I know we have tons of leagues in many big cities and we even have a professional league or two, but it is not as big a sport in the US as it is the rest of the world. Anyone with theories on why? Can the US men's team ever hope to be competitive on the international playing field?
