HTTP stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol. HTTPS is the secure version - that is if anyone intercepts your connection while using https they cannot view the content. That is why they use https for merchant sites that take card payments.

To add up HyperText Transfer Protocol or HTTP passes on port 80 while HTTPS passes on port 443. S stands for secured connection and all data that passes to this protocol are encrypted. So if someone is sniffing on your connection they wont be easily reading text transmission since your transmitted data will be encrypted.
