Hypoallergenic Cats: Good or Bad?

United States

I read that scientists are working on hypoallergenic cats. With so many cats being put to death because they can't find them homes, why do we need more? Are people so selfish that they want a cat even if they are allergic?

I think that if there were hypoallergenic cats, then more people would be willing to give them homes. So many people are allergic to cats and just can't have them around. I have 3 of them. I am very allergic, but they are so special to me that I'd rather suffer than give them up.

Wow. I value my own health before that of an animal.

I value the well-being of others, human or not, before myself. I would never get any more cats, but I'll take care of these 3 who are part of my family, until they die.

Well, yes, the ones already here should have homes, but why are we making them in first place?

We are making them for people that can't have a normal cat. These are being done in a very responsible manner. It's the people who get cats and don't bother to get them altered and let them run loose and breed at will that create a cat problem in this world. Breeders trying to produce healthy cats that never let a pet leave unaltered and now these people trying to produce cats for those that otherwise can't have one, then get blamed by innorant people such as yourself. These are the people trying to make the cat world a better place!

I can understand wanting a cat like that if you're allergic to them. As for the overpopulation of cats, spaying and neutering can correct that problem.

I think bogenetically altering an animal is wrong, because it messes with natural process. it also doesn't save any animals, in fact it kills them because people don't get regular cats they have new cats "made".

I do not like that they are doing it, but since they already did. May as well keep it. I mean it is a good idea for cat lovers if it works. I do know they are always working on cats to be immune to the FIV virus as well, if they make a break through on this, there maybe not as many sickly kittens healthier kittens have a chance for home verses a sick on. - DNatureofDTrain
