When to say hello?

Have you ever been in a situation where you see someone you used to know a while ago, but haven't seen in many years? You don't know if they remember you because you were really only acquaintances. If I have nothing to say to them I usually just pretend like I didn't see them. Is that wrong? I sometimes feel bad, but I know it would be an awkward conversation.

If I recognize someone from long ago, or I think I do, I still say hello. Pretending they didn't see you, or you didn't see them is just awkward. There is nothing wrong with being social. you don't have to engage in a long winded conversation.
