in the past the way they measures the speed of a ship was used a rope with a weight attached to the end
the rope would have a knot tied at 47feet 3 inches
they would put the weight in the water and feel for the knot getting to there hand to measuere how far they had move

I don't really know, but I think they do that because it fits it somehow.
