Men carrying pocketbooks.

Years ago an attempt to get men into carrying handbags was started. They had some great looking bags. The trend didn't catch on. I don't know if I would buy a pocketbook for my husband. I highly doubt he would carry one.

I ahve a really good friend who bought her husband one. Most men really don't seem to want to carry a pocketbook. Don't you think they feel it makes them look feminine?

It is feminine to carry a pocket book - so I would probably not buy one for any guy I know. Unless I knew a more feminine guy - then they would probably carry one.

Mine definitely would refuse. He is always telling me to leave mine at home. You aren't going to need it anyway.

I can't imagine any of the guys I know carrying handbags. That's just more of a woman thing. With the world being so large I'm sure there is probably somewhere men carry handbags. I've just never saw it. And can't imagine it being a trend that catches on any time soon.

Me neither. I know my fiance would not! He already questions why girls carry a purse rather than just putting their money and license in their pocket. Hey, I can't fit my chapstick, mirror, cell phone, breath mints, whatever else in my pocket :) Funny how a guy will tease a girl for carrying a purse, yet when he has a headache, who does he go to for tylenol?

Er!! I'm getting confused here, you mention handbags and pocketbooks, I would have thought a handbag was for carrying in your hand and a pocketbook was some kind of notebook for putting in your pocket, guess they have different meanings in different countries. I would never carry a handbag, I do have a wallet in my jacket pocket for carrying money in (and credit cards). I like to have my hands free when walking, and a handbag would get lost very quickly. There are probably a few 'New-Age Men' over here who may use a handbag.

I would classify pocketbook and handbags as being one and the same. As opposed to shoulder bag which is self definitive.

I remember this! I can see why it didn't catch on, really. Men just don't feel that comfortable carrying a handbag, from what I've witnessed. I mean, some would be okay with it, but the majority of men probably don't. I am sure that your husband would appreciate the thought behind the gift if you did buy him one, though! ^_^

I remember seeing this really sexy looking guy carrying one. He was hot, and it made him look even hotter with the bag. Ooola la.

Maybe you should patent the name "murse" you might become a millionaire overnight.

well, actually, this term is already being used. i don't know who came up with it first but if you and your hubby did, ooohh, it's too bad you weren't able to patent it!

Now, I think we may have a terminology difference here. In the UK a handbag is what you keep your lipstick, phone and junk in, a purse is what you keep your money in, and a wallet is wat you keep notes and credit cards in (purse and wallet can be slightly interchangeable). Pocketbook would, to me be a notebook small enough to fit in your pocket. I don't think it means that in America does it? I *think* you mean a pocketbook to mean a handbag? Is that right? In which case, my husband has used a small leather barrel bag for years, and I remember my dad having a small square bag on a wrist strap that he carted round right through the seventies with his wallet and keys and notebook in it. Funny thing language isnt it!

Edited to add I know you associated pocketbook with handbag in yoru post, was just unsure if handbag meant the same to you as it did to me, not sure if that came across properly in my post and looked instead as if I hadnt read it. (its been a long day)

I have seen them carrying them when I lived in Europe. And when men wear kilts they have a sporran. Which is a purse worn around the waist.

No, my hubby wouldn't either! A handbag is just too much like a purse. Also "man purse" just doesn't have that macho sound or look to it?! Could you imagine Sylvester Stallone, for example, carrying a purse?! Errrr..I mean handbag! LOL

actually, this is already a trend. And a good thing too!! It's about time men let go of their masculinity issues and just start carrying their own things, instead of asking their wives or girlfriends to carry it for them. I mean, face it guys, this is very practical! besides, a man bag doesn't have to look feminine. there are a lot of bags for men out there that look really cool. my husband carries a man bag and i must say, he looks very handsome and stylish with it, and not the least bit effeminate. i'd like to post photos of hugh jackman and david beckham carrying bags but i don't know how...

I think the big hang up is because the name purse, handbag or pocketbook. Give a guy a "backpack" or "bookbag" and no problem. I don't understand how men get along without them. I would love to be able to just carry a wallet in my pocket. People worry far too much what someone else will think of them. I do like the "Murse" idea though. It could really go somewhere.

I have tried to carry just a small change purse. I was lost without my tweezers, nail clippers, sewing kit, lip balm, hand lotion, brush, emery board, headache tablets, sunglasses, eyeglasses, dental floss, address book, calculator, pens, pencils, toothpicks, and pictures of my family.

I bought my hubby a Murse! LOL It rocks! Kenneth Cloe, very high end. Brown leather. He carries his book, phone, checkbook, and an energy drink at almost all time. It is convienent.

In the past in Portugal just about every man you saw on the street had a hand or shoulder bag. Now, however, they carry their laptops in a bag that will carry just about anything. It was never looked down upon or thought to be a gay thing because most of the did/do it.

Well I carry a brief case to the office and sometimes my laptop is with me when I go for meetings. Pocket book! I dont think so. It would be too much of a hastle to have that with me as well. Besides I use my mobile for all appointments/scheduling which is synced in with the computer at my office.

My hubby would not like it if I got him a handbag. He would laugh in my face. He will hold mine in the store long enough for me to do something but then he will give it right back to me when I'm done. There is no way he would carry it through the whole store. So I know I'd never buy my hubby one.

There is nothing wrong with a man--gay or straight--carrying a pocketbook...remember the trend a few years ago with the fanny packs? Thats nothing more than a purse
