I highly recommend taking someone with you who is knowledgable about cars. A friend who is an automechanic, or works in a body repair shop, etc. Consult your Kelly blue book to make sure you aren't getting overcharged also. :-) The best value in terms of price per life left in the car is a 2 year old car with under 40,000 miles. It will have taken the largest hit in depreciation, but will still have the most time left in it.

Buy something you want, but have it checked out by lemonbusters first. Make sure it hasn't been wrecked! That's a big one!
