Neurotic Dog?

Do you have a dog? My beagle is a little (okay, a lot!) neurotic and the vet tells me that this is pretty normal for the breed. Ours has a habit of chewing on one of her front paws, making it sore and raw. Once it heals up, she does it again. Weird dog! What strange habits does your dog have?

My dog used to chew on parts too. It turned out he had a rash, and once the vet healed it, he didn't do that anymore! Are you sure it's normal for a dog to basically hurt itself by chewing so much ?? My dog was funny though, he would do things like hide under the pool table during a storm. And btw, why do dogs always feel the need to try and stand up in a car? I would have to sit by my dog and hold him down, otherwise he'd try to stand up and fall over every time! Weird dog :)

:O) Dogs are strange creatures -- that's for sure! We've had two different vets over the past few years and both said that beagles usually display some sort of nervous habit. I guess chewing on a paw is pretty common. I feel bad for her because she actually gets her paw all raw and sore but no matter what we do, she keeps at it. She stands up in the car, too, just like your dog. It's good to know that mine isn't the only oddball dog out there! I'll bet that dogs sometimes look at us and think, "boy, are they weird!"

Man, am I glad to read these posts! Here I was thinking that our pup had a problem, but she sounds exactly like the dogs mentioned here! Ours goes and hides by the garage in a storm (so much so, that when we first moved in to our place, she was only 5 mths old at the time, she went so far down the gap between the garage and the fence, that she got stuck! At the end it was bricked, so the only way to get her out was to cut a hole in the iron wall of the garage, to get the poor terrified thing out!) I feel she has been a little more skittish lately, so I think something may have frightened her more recently. We moved her crate from outside our bedroom into the kitchen/laundry area, but now I can't do a load of wash when she's in bed, as she is afraid of the sound of the washing machine! And as for being in the car! Well we tried a harness to keep her protected, but she always wanted to stand up and get near the window, so she was always getting tangled up. So now whoever isn't driving needs to sit in the back seat with her and try and keep hold of her. Heaven help us if we ever need to take her somewhere with only one of us! And the chewing!! Our girl has gotten into this habit of first thing in the morning when I let her out of her crate, she'll run and jump on the bed and proceed to chew at herself, either her back, her leg, her paw, and then she'll lick it. Then she'll lick my face (practically giving me a tongue bath in the process), and if I have my fluffy dressing gown on - well that gets the nibbling treatment also. She will be quite happy doing that for half an hour or more. I think she just likes the time spent with us, and being a little neurotic, she feels she needs to be doing something all the time. But as soon as I say 'Want some breakfast Shebuh?' she's off the bed and making a beeline for the kitchen. I guess it's just one of those weird things us beagle owners have to get used to.

Buc is energetic and will chew anything left in the yard, but he's perfectly sane!

My beagle is neurotic about his paws too, he just won't let anyone touch them, including to clip his nails...we're going to have to put him under just to have his nails done!!

Wow, yours is REALLY sensitive about his paws! Maggie doesn't like to have her nails clipped, but if I hold her to keep her calm, my husband can clip them. After she's done, she heads over to the cabinet where we keep the dog treats and waits for her cookie!

I have never had a beagle that did that; however, I have had a German shorthair that has done that. Both breeds are hunting breeds and they have to have more excersize time than what I like to call "lap dogs." If they are confined for long periods of time, or are not getting the excersize they need, they will pick up habits like this. I would suggest taking your dog out for long walks, taking them to the park or anywhere that your dog can get out and run. I am positive that if your dog is excersized until s/he is "worn out" so to speak, on a regular basis, that this habit will stop. Some hunting dogs have the urge to hunt more than others. It sounds to me that your dog is the restless type, and the urge is strong. If it is not able to run and sniff around, they tend to get stir crazy. I bring up the German shorthair with the foot chewing problem, because when the hunting season was not in effect, he was in the kennel more, which brought on the nervous chewing. Long runs/walks will help, taking them to a secluded area to run or a dog park will help. Make puzzles by tying up treats in a knoted up old towel or use a kong, something that will make your dog think. Drag a bone or something smelly around the yard and hide it so the dog will have a trail to follow to find their treat. Keep your dog thinking and working and I'll bet the habit will cease.

Thanks for the suggestions... I'll try to exercise her more and see if that helps. She does get a fair amount of activity now and plenty of attention, but maybe with more physicalexertion, she'll calm down a bit.

My puppy is only part beagle but she will do the same things. She doesn't chew as much as she likes to itch, for no apparent reason! She'll rub up against the couch and than rub all of the floor and always itch...no matter what. She's also very rambunctious. She's almost a year old now so I'm thinking it'll wear off as she gets older, but I don't honestly know because I don't know that much about beagles.

My dogs are beagle mix and they chew on paws. I do use vitamin E oil to smooth it a little bit. Pets have allergy sometimes, but vet will tell you that it is all neurotic. I notice that they do less chewing during the summer, when they are outdoor more often.

Our beagle suffers from seperation anxiety. He can't stand it when his daddy isn't around enough and he will bark non-stop. He also ALWAYS runs away when it rains. We've had to start kenneling him in the garage when it rains. My part beagle also seems to always chew, or scratch. She is also very energetic and from what we can tell she's almost 2 years old.

Our dog only scratches himself a lot which leaves patches of his skin having less hair. Aside from that, he doesn't have any other weird habits.

Mine likes to scratch at his nose and make it raw or sneeze. I thought it was just him. Thank you for letting me know its not.
