Growing calla lilies in Mexico

June 26, 2006 4:38pm CST
I have recently planted some very neat colored calla lily bulbs. They have been planted since spring & most of them are up. We have been through a couple months of marine layer gloom , so sun has been little these past couple months. The problem I have is some plants are having leaf rot or mush. I was under the impression they liked a lot of water. I need watering suggestions. I must tell you that I have a beautiful tropical garden & take extreme pride in my garden. So I do have a green thumb!! Bernadette

Dear Bernadette, I know what you mean! I live in California and all spring we hardly had any sun! Your lilies are too wet. I water my daylilies twice per week in the summer and about every 5 days in the winter if it doesn't rain. Try to water just the ground, not the leaves and flowers, and wait until they dry out a little. If they're in the shade, move them!
