Do you think my DAD is FUNNY or just plain RUDE

My dad is 76 and thinks he is a real card. He has a radio next to his phone. If he does not recognize the number on the call display, he will turn up the radio and answer"JOEY'S POOLHALL" at the top of his lungs. The person either hangs up or requests to speak with one of my parents. "CAN YA SPEAK UP" is usually his next line..the caller repeats him/herself. "Yup he's here but he's playin pool. Can I take a message for him?" He really cracks himself up with this, but sometimes I think it is rude. How do you answer the phone if you don't know who it is? Do you think my dad is rude?

OMG that is funny! I love it! Yeah, I think your dad is really funny, however I can feel for ya too. I am sure you find this very annoying and embarrassing at times. Think of it this way, one day you will look back at this and smile yourself.

Oh! This reminds me of a situation with my own dad! My parents were getting a series of prank calls. One kid asked "Is Mike there? and, since there was no Mike in our family, my mom said "You have the wrong number." Another kid called, again asking for Mike and my mom again said it was a wrong number. Well, she got angry but my dad said, "Let me answer the calls." After about four times, one of the kids called back and said, "Hi this is Mike. Are there any messages for me?" My dad replied, "JEEZ Mike! It's about time you called. The phone's been ringing off the hook for you!" Well the kids all started to laugh. My dad said, "OK guys, have you had your fun now?" to which they said yes. So he said, "OK well then, stop calling here, all right?" and they agreed. One kid said, "Thanks mister... you were fun" and that was the final call. My dad did like a good bit of silliness, just as much as the next guy :)

No he is definately not rude AskAlly, but just having some fun and at his age this is just what he should be doing. Gee, be thankful that he still has his faculties and can enjoy life because there are enough people who don't reach his age or are in a Nursing Home. Just hope that you are still able to do these sorts of things when you reach his age AskAlly. Generally I just say "hello" if I don't know who is calling and let them take it from there. They have dialled the number, so they should know that and if they have that, then they know who they are phoning. :)

I can imagine that your mother was mortified AskAlly, but what about the Pastor. What was his reaction?

The reason I brought this up was because their pastor had called from his cell phone. My dad did not recognize the number and answered JOEY'S POOL HALL. It was my mother that was mortified. I almost fell off my chair laughing. I really need to show her these posts!

You say your dad is 76. My question to you would be: Why are you listening to him answer the phone in his home? Aren't you a little old to be listening in on his conversations? I think he's just having a little fun at someone else's expense. It's harmless. Lighten up a little.

We live on a farm and our houses are about 100 yards apart with a very well worn path between the two houses. We never lock our doors we just sort of tap and holler hellooo. My dad still comes out for chores everyday and when we are all done ( we have a couple of hired hands) we all go to my mom and dad's for coffee and cookies. I often pop by in the evening just to check and see how they are getting on. We are actually very very close

No! I don't think your Dad is rude at all! He has taken a situation like an unsolicited telemarketing call that would probably annoy some people and turned it into something funny. In years to come you will think back to this and laugh to yourself. If you can't laugh at yourself.......

Your dad is still cool even at his age. I think it would be funny at first but may get annoying in the long run. Good thing he decided to stop it already.

There'd be no telling him different anyway. On his 70th birthday he said he was done with protocol and had earned that right the hard way. He's a lovable old codger

Oh that is hilarious!!! I hate receiving phone calls from people I dont know and your dad has a great sense of humor to do this. It could be worse, there is one guy that answers the phone and pretends to be a cop and interrogate the guy which would be a little scary being on the other end but your dad's idea is fantastic.

Tom Mabe... that guy is hillarious! Revenge on the Telemarketers. I also like the one where he asks the carpet cleaners if he they can get rid of blood... and I mean a lot of blood. Ha ha, I want to do that so bad to telemarketers but mostly I don't even bother answering them when they call.

I don't I have an answering machine message that requests all telemartketers hang up as I am call screening and thus will never answer their call. I change it every once in a while but keep it 30 seconds or more to ensure that they don't wait to leave a message and then I don't have to be botherer.

Oh I think this is the funniest thing I have ever heard. I think it is wonderful that he has that much spirit at 76. Let him have his fun, he has paid his dues and deserves a little fun. I would never think this is rude even if I was the caller.

My dad is a character that's for sure. He still ranches with us and at least a couple of times a day he has us in stitches. He has a very dry sense of humor.

I think it's funny. I don't answer my phone if I don't know who it is, half the time even if I DO know who it is.

I think he is hilarious! although I do not think I would have appreciated him so much knowing it was the preacher calling, but it WAS still funny. I will not pick-up if it is long distance, or a toll free number.

Well since I am probably closer to "pops" age than yours, I kind of like the routine. If it is a telemarketer on the other end, they get what's coming for intruding on your peace and quiet. If it was some more important call, it might be kind of embarassing. I don't think it is so much rude. But, maybe your dad will grow out of it after a while. I see it as pretty much harmless fun.

I think that your father is quite a character! LOL! And I'm sure that a lot of those calls (when he doesn't know who is calling) are telemarketers and such, anyway. I guess that I can see how it is a little rude, but I also think that it's kind of funny! It really depends on who is calling. Besides, he's not really doing any harm! ^_^

I think your dad and my dad could be friends! My dad very rarely answers the phone with a simple "hello." His favorite way of answering the phone is "Jack's mulebarn. Which a-- would you like to speak with?" It really makes my mom mad so he doesn't do it when she's home but he always answers his cell phone that way. If I don't know who is calling, I just pick up the phone and say "Yeah?" We get a lot of really stupid phone calls, too, though. My husband is military and we are stationed in North Dakota now. But we are constantly getting phone calls from like the highway patrol and stuff back in Missouri wanting us to donate money to them. I keep them on the phone for as long as I can, because I figure if they are too stupid to realize that 701 is NOT a Missouri area code they deserve to have their time wasted. :)

I dont think your dad is rude. It is his phone. His house. I dont think that it should be anything but funny. Why worry about such trivial things? I dont answer that way but it would be funny. I did answer the phone once with: Jean's dry cleaning, drop your pants and jack et off.

At first I thought it might be rude. But now as I think it over I have changed my mind. He handles the calling in the manner he thinks is best. He is inventive. I just let the answering machine answer my calls. If I want to talk, I do. If not, well, oh well.

i think this is really funny... but i know it might irritating some times. But there is age factor too... when person get older they acted like child again... so dont take it on your heart just simply enjoy it. if i dont know who it is i just simply say wrong number and hang up the phone.

Your Dad is 76 years old. If doing this amuses him, let him have some fun. He is not harming anyone, so let him enjoy himself. I tnink it is funny, not rude.

Your dad's 76 after all. He's just living it up. You can be assured that he's not the only one pulling these phone stunts. He takes joy in it which keeps in young at active. It's not exactly rude imo but a mere inconvenience for the caller.
