The biggest advantage is in higher search engines ranking, the more sites linking to your own site the more the search engines will see it as "valuable" or "useful" site. of course sites linking to your site should be quality sites not just "link farms" and it's better when they are on the same subject as your site too. Of course more links also leads more people to your site "potential customers" if you are selling something. But as matter of money more links will not pay you directly, they will just help you receive more traffic either directly from the links or from the search engines as your site will appear higher on the results lists.
