Which do you prefer having at your home, a shed or a basement? Why?

Do you prefer having a shed or a basement for storing things that you do not use frequently or for boxes and other things. Why do you choose one over the other? I have a shed and I like it better than having a basement as I don't have to worry about flooding below my house that could rise up into the rest of my house. The shed holds all my extra stuff.

I actually store most of my stuff in the attic. The basement is where my bedroom and laundry room are. I would love to have a shed for the lawnmower, bikes, gardening stuff, etc.

I too have an attic but I do not use it at all since it is located in a very strange place and it is hard to get in there. Having a shed is good for storing yard tools and holiday decorations and bikes and stuff like that.

My attic is located above my washer and dryer upstairs in my townhouse so I would have to climb on top of my washer and dryer to get into my attic.

I love our attic. There are stairs that go up from the kitchen. There's a window at each end and the roof is very high. If it was insulated better it would probably be my bedroom instead of the basement.

We have a shed outback to store our stuff in as well as a laundry for storage. But I'd also like to have both. Especially since we live on a earthquake fault and had 2(A F3 & A F1) tornados hit here in 2006. Our town is still recovering from damage. With storm season starting again in a few months would feel better if we had a basement. Altho, we're in a low line flood area so it probably would flood some during the year.

Having both would be beneficial in many ways just like the previous members mentioned. My parents have had problems with their basement though with both flooding and carpenter ants. Have either can have its bad points as well but we do need storage space.

I would like to have both. The basement would be nice if a tornado came close. I live in an area where we can get tornados. The shed for storing outside stuff. I just bought a shed, my son still has to put it together. I will be very happy when it gets put together. I have to wait until spring. I also want to get some pull down steps for the attic, for inside storage.

Great point there to have a basement in case of a tornado. We do not get them here very often but having a basement would be very good if it were to happen. I have an attic too but it is difficult to get up there since it is above my washer and dryer. LOL

I live in a townhouse so a basement is not a possibility here. I do not have a lot of stuff to store so I use my shed and also have an attic.

I gave you a + rate for your question. I too have a shed, but would prefere a basement. I don't worry about floods out here. It would be bigger and more convienant to go into the basement. I worry about my shed to get ruined when a monsoon hits.

Those are very good points as well. A shed is good for storage of yard tools and equipment and bikes and outdoor sports items. I also put empty boxes in there in case I need them for later use. A basement would be good if a tornado hit as well as more storage space. I live in a low lying area so we do need to be concerned about flooding though we have not had any problems yet here. Thank you for the plus rating. I do the same with your topics. :-)

You are right about the shed with tools. Better than a basement for that. Thanks again for the + and best responses. I do the same for you, as you are intelligent, and always have great comments. Thank you.

I would prefer a nice basement. Right now we have a cellar that is partly dirt. Can't keep nothing down there. We only go down there if the weather is bad. We don't have a shed but have a garage that holds most of our stuff. Not the cars,LOL.

That is funny that your garage does not hold your cars but most everything else. I would be parking my car in the garage. :-)

I have neither because my house is only 7 years old and they ceased to build houses with basements in the United Kingdom a long while ago. I have a few odd items in the loft, but mainly just store things away wherever I can find a little space. If given the option I would certainly opt for a basement rather than a shed. A shed is very insecure and it would not be siutable for storing valuable items, whereas a basement is probably more secure than your home in general since a burglar would be likely to overlook it.

The only problem with basements here in the US is of flooding problems as many people that live in areas where flooding happens frequently have tons of water in their basements. It is probably due to the basement not being built better by the builders. Other than that basements would be a good thing to have though right now I am happy with my shed.

I would rather have a basement I think because you could turn it into another room. It could be the hangout spot or another bedroom. A shed wouldn't really do us any good because we don't have tools or anything, just a lot of baby things.

That is another good point that a basement can be turned into another room of sorts. My coworker and her family used their basement as another room for their computer and office stuff.

I think a basement will do it for me because I think it has more space and I'm all about space, the more the better.

I live in a trailer so I don't have a basement. I had two sheds but one of them got knocked down in a bad wind storm last year. I do have an attic. I don't really have a preference about where to store stuff, I just wish I had more room.lol.

Having more room would be nice and wouldn't mind having a basement as well as a shed for storage.

I would have to say a shed or garage because I live in Florida and we don't have basements here. This is because we are surround by water and basements have a tendency to fill up with water. :)

Out of both options given here I would have to say I'd much rather prefer having a basement. The reasons behind this are that in the summer you have an area of the house that is cooler to go into when it is hot outside. You can also go down there if you need some time away from someone else who is in the house. If you're entertaining people, you could have an entertainment centre set up down there and have people go down there after they are finished dinner when you want to relax. I also like how you could have different rooms down in the basement as well. You could set one up as a computer room or as an actual bedroom or just keep the washer and dryer down there. You can also put a deep freeze downstairs or even go as far as to create a theme room like an 80's disco with a dance floor like my Grandmother and Grandfather on my Dad's side had in their basement. I remember going to their place at a young age and dancing on their dance floor. It was a lot of fun. Because they were competitive dancers I used to ask them to play music and dance. They would end up dancing the cha-cha and other dances. Ever since I saw that I've wanted to put that in a place that I move into if it has a basement. It would give me and my other half something else to do if we were bored and looking for something to do or even to entertain people when they come over. It's good to have all the storage space as well in a basement as opposed to a shed because it gives you a more secure place to put your things. You don't have to worry about someone breaking in to your basement and taking things. For that, they would have to break in to your house and you can take measures to protect your belongings that way. With a shed, you have to make it ultra secure and even then, who knows, someone could pick the lock you put on the shed door and begin to take things out of it. I think with a basement you as well can keep your belongings out of the elements. You can avoid having them get water damage or broken because they are within the house as opposed to a shelter that could end up being more leaky in the long run. I believe a basement offers a lot more space for storage as well as opposed to a shed. A shed always offers a limited amount of space for storage so some things you want to put away may not be able to fit in a shed. At least with a basement if you have large items that need to be stored they have a better chance to fit down there. A basement also can protect those things from weather related damage that a shed might not. In conclusion, I believe there are a lot of options that a basement can give you that a shed cannot. It can help to protect your belongings and it offers you more options in terms of decorating or the ability to make other unique rooms. I can also help you to keep cool when you're going through some hot weather. There are so many options available with a basement that I'm sure I can't come up with them all. Thanks for allowing me to share! xx

I use my attic to store those types of things in. We have a large garage and two out buildings but no basement. Our area seems to have aproblem with water in basement so I could be afraid of my things being ruined. I store things in the building but mice and black snakes tend to get in them. I have my attic full of my valuable things that are in storage.
