Do you sneak snacks into the theater?

Just curious how many people pay the high prices for snack food at the movie theater and how many of you sneak in your own food. I have gone as far to buy a special big purse that we use to sneak things in. In the end I pay less even though I had to buy a purse. Then we go to Walmart and buy the candy for $1 a box. It is $3 a box at the movies. Sometimes I will also sneak sodas in depending on our mood. If we have the cash then we buy popcorn. I have never snuck that in though.

I brought baby carrots in with me two weeks ago -- they definitely don't sell those at the counter :-) My husband bought popcorn and a soda, but the prices really are ridiculous.

Baby carrots...now that is something I have never thought about sneaking in. Reminds me of a commercial where the girl is trying to sneak in rice cakes.

My sister one time brought in homemade snack mix and she was crunching so loudly that I was really embarrassed. Have any of you had this experience? My best friend always brings in her own water, even if I offer to buy her one! I usually buy a soda or popcorn when I am there and go to the cheaper movie.

Yes we do that all the time. We only sneek in candy and once some water. But in the end my son still wanted stuff from the theater. But my husband got his candy, way cheaper at the Walmart next to the theater. lol. And I have a big purse too, can you imagine trying to sneek in popcorn and have it steamming out of your purse and you get busted, that is one thing that I am not sneeking into the movies

haha...when I read the part about the steam I got such a funny image in my head. Too funny. I can see me doing something like that. "Ma'am either your purse is on fire or you have popcorn in there." What would one say to that? lol

I gotta tell you that I do not sneak snacks into the theater because, well, first of all, I LOVE movie popcorn!! Second, the theater we go to is a restoration effort in a very small town. Movies are three dollars, and a large popcorn with two large pops is $5. Now, there's not a lot of choice...only one movie showing, open only on weekends. But, It is totally run by volunteers interested in bringing this peice of town history back to life that they are not worried about price. What a great life!

We also have a $1 movie theatre that shows older movies, but I don't think they would stay in business without the money they make from the food and drinks. You hate to see these places go out of business because that's all that a lot of folks can afford.

I wish I had a small town theater. That is cheap. I can understand why you wouldn't want to sneak in food. Paying keeps it alive. We have a drive in here in town and when it is open we always go there. We always buy food from them because the admission price is cheap. They make most of their money from the food and that is what keeps them open.

Oh, definitely! ^_^ A friend and i once even brought in microwaved food in plastic containers and ate it at a movie! *laugh* That was fun *laugh* The prices of concessions at movie theatres today are just insanely high. I went to the movies a week or two ago and just brought some little candies for myself. I've never gone so far as to sneak in popcorn, either.. but then I'm not a real big fan of the stuff *laugh*

Well, i usually pay for pop corn and a drink then sneak candy in...so i dont feel totally bad for sneaking in snacks, i know the reason why its soo high is because of people sneaking in snacks but i mean really what did they expect people to do?! Anyways, I try to even it out so i dont feel guilty later on. after all im paying the ticket to see the movie, and buying a large popcorn and a large drink...thats well over 20 bucks there!

Yeah, we definitely sneak in our own food and drink at the movies. It's ridiculous! Where I live, it's like 7 dollars to see the movie, and a small popcorn is 4 dollars...it's crazy! You need to bring like an extra 25 bucks with you...ridiculous.

Sure do! I buy the movie theater popcorn no matter what the cost because there is nothing better that eating it at the show. I do almost always bring drinks though because I will not pay $4-5 for a soda. Candy is something I bring if the kids are with me and I do the same thing and buy the big size at the Dollar Store

I have to say that I always used to buy candy from Blockbuster, too (and I see a lot of people doing that too) then one day I was at the dollar store and they had the exact same candy as at Blockbuster for much cheaper, so now Blockbuster has lost my business with the candy.

The prices are pretty outrageous--did you know that theaters make more money on concessions than on the movie admission? It's true. I try to eat before the movie, or I bring in a candy bar or Powerbar. I'm trying to eat healthier and aside from being expensive, theater food is salty, fatty, not at all healthy.

Don't know the exact breakdown, but the studio gets part of the ticket price, part of it goes for renting the prints, etc.

I heard that they make more on the concessions. Kind of weird to think about it that way especially since our theater charges $9 for an adult movie ticket. The prices are killing me!

I think the only thing I would pay for at the movies is the popcorn and cheese pretzels. But everything else like sodas and candies I have to say that I might just sneak those things in. Its bad enough that the price of just entering the movies is expensive, but then food there, those prices are outrageous. Then the times when I actually do go to the movies I am going with my husband and four children, maybe to watch a child flick. There is no way that I would be able to enjoy the movies if the total cost of snacks will add up to three or four times it costed me to see the movies.

Yes, I do. There's no reason for the cinemas to have their items priced so high, they already make enough money from the pictures. You can get the movies from a dvd shop for a dollar to watch in your own home. I take my backpack. I put my lunch in it and I watch the movie. There's no reason that the cinema shouldn't let us do this even though I know they don't.

We definately sneek snacks into the theatre! If we did not we could not affors to go. At $7 a movie, and $4 for a small popcorn, it's outrageous. I too go to Wal-Mart, and have that big purse that doubles as a beach bag.lol My kids use to say they were embarassed, but now they get what they want, and don't have to worry about me fussing about the cost. We have never been busted either. That would be hilarious. My oldest would probably deny even knowing me.lol

We almost always sneak stuff in. My husband sees that as the only benefit of me carrying a purse! When we take the kids, we bring a snack bar for each of them and sometimes a juice box--far more nutritious than what we can buy there. We're fairly frugal people and can't justify the price of popcorn and soda at theaters. It's highway robbery--especially after paying the ridiculously high price for the tickets. If they're going to screw us--please pick one or the other--not both (tickets and food).

Here in the UK, they've really only just started trying to stop you taking your own food and drink into the major chain cinemas. I never really bought anything from the concession stands anyway because of the prices, but I always get through about a litre of water during a film so I still smuggle that in! It's ridiculous but there is no way I'm going to pay £2.50 for 50cl of water (and I've have to buy 2 anyway) when I've just paid nearly £7 for the cinema ticket. Like a previous poster, there is an independent cinema near me which is fantastic. You can take your own, but I tend to get a herbal tea and a slice of carrot cake from their lovely little cafe. I heartily approve of that! The major chain cinemas make way too much money already, without fleecing us out of our hard-earned cash for overpriced fizzy drinks and stale popcorn!

Me and my girlfriend always sneak candy and drinks into the theater. There is a dollar store right beside the theater so we get drinks for 70 cents instead of 4 something. We also get 2 chocolate bars for under 2 bucks at the dollar store.

yes, I do. Candy, chips, drinks. When the door opens I jump cause I think it's one of the people coming in to check and will see that I have brought them. I'm waiting anytime now for them to search everyone before they let you in to see if you are carrying any food stash! lol But I agree the prices are ridiculous! They do that so you have to buy from them at their prices and make a huge profit! They KNOW you HAVE to eat while you're in there! Great discussion starter!!

I think it is very unfair on part of the theatres to charge almost triple for food items than the normal MRP which is charged by retailers.Though , I would like to get in the food from outside , in the theatres here , they don't allow outside foodstuffs to be taken inside as they frisk everyone before they enter the theatres. I think something has to be done about this and food items sold inside the theatre should be sold at no extra cost.
