cats and unusual herbs

I bought an herb, Valerian today to try for a nervous condition. I had left it out and my cat got very interested. She tried to open the small package. So my granddaughter put a very small amount on her scratching post like we do her catnip. She started acting like it was her catnip. The thing about the herb is it does not have a pleasant order. She became more hyper than if it were her usual green herb. Has anyone ever encountered your cat doing any thing like this?
