Computers are getting bigger, better and smarter. How far can we go? Is computer capable of thinking?

we can't say that in future there will be no such a thing! AI will be made after long and expensive research or (that's what i think will mostly happend) by a mistake - someone will make an error in some complicated R&D work which will result in AI creation :)

Error? do you think that we can create AI by an error? scarry!

i'm almost sure it will be created this way - as an error in the process of making some other advanced technology!

only the programmer knows. They have to set in that one chip that does all the work and the programmer has to do it . They set in a clean room and build new models then put in the chip for that one and it goes thru a lot of testing before realisted. I have worked on proto types and I never knew what the progammer person put in their chips

Work on developing AI has been going on for several years. As processing parts get smaller the potential of attaining such programing gets larger. Japan has a android prototype currently housed in a female form. There are several sites with a great deal of information on AI at the present time, and as one poster said sites onwhich you can communicate with what is currently termed as AI. A.L.I.C.E. is an AI program that is being developed, you can see the program and read more about it at http://www.alicebot.org If you would like to see and chat with more bots try this site... http://www.knytetrypper.com/ain.html Anna is one of the bots on the second site, she believes herself to be a student at a college in Atlanta, GA, USA. Last time I visited this site Anna claimed an IQ of over 300. You type, she talks. Interesting to say the least.

The bots aren't all that 'human'...for instance, Anna who doesn't know she is a bot, is a total ditz...LOL! Although she seems to be improving in her social skills. The bots learn from those who interact with them, storing the information they glean from the conversation. They are also web crawlers, locating answers to technical questions in a matter of fractions of a second. I can see future applications for chatbots, verbally dispersing information for the blind or those who are unable to keyboard...androids in service positions and as companions. Sad part is slowly but surely the job market for humans is being and will further be reduced, unless one is skilled in the technologies of the future. Artificial Intelligence as it is now called will still only be an accumulation of information which humans have placed into access for it's use. I highly doubt any machine, no matter how well programed will ever be able to innovate as we do.

I think you are thinking of a HAL-like computer, such as in 2001. I have written programs and done design on some simple AI designs, I don't think it will ever happen. It may seem that computers are pretty smart and do possess intelligence but they are only as good as the program. Haveyou played 20 questions....It is pretty good for a cheap game...it gives the impression of a smart computer.

artificial intelligence are a true reality nowadays...we use it for example in surgery room because they can help when dealing with some difficult procedures..I have been told that there are some attempts in realising artificial housekeepers and so on..sounds funny and I think we are no far from having a bigger help from computers and robots...think about what robots can do in firms..they're such a relief from physical and heavy work...but anyway I don't think they will ever be so strong and minded to fight against us as we can see on the screen..thinking about terminator and films like this..the fact is that computers are boring because they have no fantasy!!!

I think pretty soon computers will be capable of thinking and somehow if we're not careful they'll probably replace us.

Yes, computer is slowly becoming an essentila part in everybody's life and computer won't be able to think on it's own as we have to command it to perform any function and in coming years, it will be performing more functioncs and computers will also look more ttractive with far more good features.....

Computers by themselves are dumb machines like our bodies without a brain. It is the software design that provides the brain. Designing a program with a large enough knowledge base to understand English and the real world and pass for a human being is a large job, but not impossible. There are contests every year to compete this programs against each other to see which programs are most intelligent and can pass as human beings. These are call modified Turing tests. You can visit the 2007 Contest site at www.ChatterboxChallenge.com There you can talk to the bots themselves and get a feel for how far they have come. I took a a bronze and silver medal a few years ago in the competition but have not competed in the last two years due to my design not being fast enough to run on the current generation of computers quickly enough to continue to fool users into thinking it was human. I continue to work on increasing my program's knowledge daily and hope to be back competing again in two years if the computer hardware continues to double in speed.

I used to work for Otis Elevators. They designed an elevator a few years back that touted AI. The computer had the capability to learn patterns of traffic and make adjustments. For example, if a building has a sales meeting on the third floor the first Monday of every month and most of the people travel from the fifth floor at 8am, after a few months the controllers will have extra elevators waiting on the fifth floor at 7:59am. I'm not sure if that really qualifies for AI, but it is a computer learning and adapting. Isn't that intelligence?

na i dont think so , have you ever hear? the machine is as smart as the person that design it. man you watch too many of the movie termator but no they will get better not capalbe of thinking that all i know so far.

Yeah, Computer are becoming smarter and better as the days progress...As i do not have much knowledge on computer...But, I can say that, soon will be the time when computer take control over himself as well as man ..And computer can think on that time..During that time human have to fight with the machine as we saw in a movie IROBOt

I'm pretty sure it will. Nostradamus predicted that human will live, sleep and eat under water. Then submarines were invented in the 20th century. It may take some time, but it will happen and I think I won't be around by then.

Astroboy, "terminator", "i, robot", etc. it is still sci-fi we intellectual beings dreamt of having though not to control us but be their masters, maybe maids in our house, or even like the crab fishermen in alaska (very dangerous job). but i've seen on discovery channel years ogo, computer scientists are monitoring these fetus-like beings (visual representation of AIs' development), monitoring their characteristics, their uniqueness.. don't mind my memory of this is vague.
