"What creature goes on four feet in the morning, on two at noonday, on three in the evening?"
This is the riddle that Oedipus was given by the Sphinx when he crossed her path. He got the riddle correct and she killed herself because of it.

The answer is Man. Walks on fours during infancy using hands and knees, walks on two legs during childhood and at the prime of life, and walks on three - legs plus cane - during old age.
