why appearanceds are deceptive?

Many tourist places when viewed on screen (TV, Video, Computer, Theater, etc.) and on paper (photos, paintings, magazines etc.) look very beautiful and tempting to visit. When we actually visit the place, we find that all the gloss is a hype or the place is not so attractive or informative or resourceful. With the advancement of age or with shoestring budgets, are we gradually getting ourselves satisfied with screen views?
