All through my life I have heard that dogs and cats could not be raised together because it is in the dog's DNA to kill cats. I don't believe this is so because, I have both in my house and the cat bullies the dogs. I have dogs that range from chiahuahas to german sherperds. 11 in all and 1 cat. I have never seen one of the dogs so much as attempt to hurt the cat. Now, all but one of my dogs had never even seen a cat prior to being introduced to the one we have now. They play, sleep, and eat together. Could it be that dogs are raised in a manner that causes them to want to kill cats? Is the gene that causes it just lossing it's affectiveness? Or are my animals just strange?

I have a dog and cat that get along quite well. The cat is more teh "boss" of the house because I had him for 7 years before I got the dog. The dog won't steal his food (we helped with that lesson) or bark at the cat or chase him (he will repeatedly poke him with his nose to try to get him to play, but the cat usually just walks away with a look of long-suffering on his face). However, if a strange cat (or dog, or person) comes in our yard, the dog will bark and chase it if we let him outside, so I think it has more to do with who and what is accepted in the home territory. Animals that are part of the "pack" don't get chased, but strangers, regardless of their species, do.

Well if yours are strange then so are mine. We have several cats and a dog and they all get along. All of our dogs got along with cats over the years. However our cats and dog even get along with the hamster and rabbit. Our one cat will let the hamster sleep on him. So I don't think they are natural enemies when one is talking about house pets. It could be in the wild they are but I've never had a problem with it.

Dogs & Cats - Love to play together
I'm with you I don't believe it either. We have 3 dogs and a cat and well the dogs play with the cat and the cat will go up to the dogs to even try to get them to play with her. It's cute to see them running through the house. Sometimes the smaller dogs will even help the cat groom...lol Yes I think some dogs are raised to keep cats out of the yard. I know dogs like to chase them but not all dogs chase to kill. I use to have this one big grey cat that would like to run dogs out of the yard. You talk about weird. But some one poured Anit-freeze all over her and killed her one night. sighs.

If the dog really want to kill the cat , the cat is so much smarter that the dog wouldnt have a chanse. They both know this thats why the cat is king.
