Will Web 2.0 be a repeat of Dot Com bust of late nineties or will it create new exciting opportunities for mankind? The parallels between heydays of Dot Com boom and current web frenzy are striking. The pre 2000 internet era saw hundreds of thousands of websites getting launched and then vanishing without a trace. Are things any different now? One major difference between the two boom periods is the business model of the websites. While the websites launched in nineties lacked a sustainable business model , the current lot has a more mature business model that can sustain in the long run. Unlike those days when website owners thought that the easiest way to make money is to grab more eyeballs and merely display advertisements , the current scenario actually makes posible to earn money by advertisements through innovative programs such as Google Adsense that displays only relevant ads to the users. Another major propelling factor is the participation of large number of people through interactive mediums such as Blogs. So now the question arises, will the Web 2.0 crash like Dot Com of the nineties? I believe it is our responsibility to disown sites that do not have innovative content. It is said that "Content is King". We should apply this while using the websites and not get swayed by hype and mere attractive layouts. Regards, Anup
