I am not for sure but maybe it is due to fusion. Like for example, as adults, our skill in one solid "bone". As a newborn, I believe that it is considered seperate "plates" until they all fuse together. My son has a medical condition and his plates are still not fused. Most doctors refer to his skull as his plates and don't use the phrase skull. I don't know though. I guess there are lots of things in the world that are mysterious!
