GoPets is a global community composed of real people and virtual pets. Each GoPet is a unique 3D companion that makes its home on its owner’s desktop. GoPets are not restricted to a single computer, however -- when they feel like wandering, they leave home and visit the desktops of other GoPets users. In their travels, GoPets visit their owners’ friends and families, as well as introducing their owners to other GoPets members who share similar interests. These traveling GoPets are messengers and ambassadors – they form the dynamic network of connections that comprises the GoPets social network After GoPets members meet through their pets, they can communicate with one another in several ways. On the webpage, users can send each other web messages. Through the GoPets client, users may contact one another using Instant Chat, and users who speak different languages can send each other messages in GoPet’s new icon-based language, called IKU. You can purchase items for your pets at the Shopping webpage on the GoPets website. GoPets items are purchased with Shells, the GoPets currency. There are three different kinds of Shells: Gold Shells The coolest items can only be purchased using Gold Shells. To win prizes from GoPets games, you usually have to spend Gold Shells, as well. Gold Shells are purchased using real money. Pink Shells You are automatically awarded Pink Shells when you perform creative activities, like making IKU icons and messages and writing testimonials for your friends. Some items in the Shopping page can only be purchased with Pink Shells. Green Shells You are automatically awarded Green Shells when you are active in GoPets. Just by leaving your client logged in, you receive a constant trickle of Green Shells. Other activities that generate Green Shells include filling out and modifying your Owner Profile, adding new images to your Owner Profile, and giving gifts. Some items can be purchased with Green Shells. What is a Social Network? Social networking services let users connect to their friends and meet new people through those friends. Usually, this process involves the creation of a friends list, to which new friends can be invited. A member of a social network views the profiles of other users and uses that information to decide whether to add those users to his or her friends list. Users can find new friends by browsing the profiles of other users who comprise their immediate social network (usually limited to 3rd degree friends – friends of friends of friends). Social networks allow people who inhabit similar social circles to meet other people who are likely to share their interests. Social networks also give people a chance to reconnect with old friends, organize the contact information of current acquaintances, and even stay in touch with far-away family members. GoPets retains these functions and adds numerous other features to the social networking experience. Your GoPet is a living member of your social network – in fact, it is useful to think of your GoPet as just another person with a profile and his or her own friends list. The major difference between GoPets and their owners (besides that GoPets rarely get speeding tickets) is that your GoPet’s traveling behavior is influenced by the interests that you enter in your Owner Profile. For example, if you list “tennis” among your interests, your GoPet will be more likely to visit other users who also like tennis. When your GoPet visits another user, that user can right-click on your GoPet and view your profile. In addition, your GoPet maintains its own Travel Journal on the website, keeping a record of all the people it has visited.
