The qualities that a leader will posess depend on what kind of leader the person is trying to be and what they are trying to lead people to do. For instance I have been a leader in sports as well as music. The qualities required are different for both. Being a leader in sports requires you to be knowledgable in your sport as well as motivational. You need to earn the respect of your peers but you also need to respect them by delegating responsibility to them. In music it is very different. If you are performing with a large group of people you still need to be able to motivate them, but you do it though example. You shoe someone how the work is menat to be done. You also need to be amazingly consistent at doing your part for the team. The best leaders have a sound fundamental approach to whatever it is they are trying to lead. They know the ins and outs of what they do, whether it is sports, music, or their jobs. They tend to be consistent in their approach to whatever they are trying to do. They are also able to communicate their ideas very clearly to the rest of the team. Motivational qualities certainly help, but aren't always necessary. You will find that the best leaders are also the most respected leaders. They earn the respect of thier peers because they respect their peers and the opinions of their peers. They rise to the top because of their ability and stay there because of respect. They have a vision of what they want to accomplish and are able to get others to see that vision and work together towards a common goal. In the end the leader still realizes that he is part of the team. The team does not succeed because of him and he does not fail if the team fails. He realizes that it takes a collective effort from top to bottom for the team to be the best it can be, and he knows how to help everyone get the desired results. Remember the leader is only part of the team.
