As a website designer I have certain aspects I tend to avoid when designing, certain things I advise my clients against or push them towards when creating their site, such as ... if they want music on the page, insisting they have a way for the user to turn it off, since some of us hate it. My question for you is, what are elements of web sites that drive you nuts? It can be anything .. certain page styles, certain color schemes, certain types of menus, embedded music, video players, etc ... horizontal scrollbars, etc. Think back to the sites you've visitted and list your complaints. What features or additions do you absolutely hate or get immediately irritated with when visiting a website?

you and I work in the same field! I agree with the flash intro and music comments... and how about those sites with long pages and not even anchors to help avoid scrolling?

Oh I agree with that! Throwing in a "return to top" is not done nearly enough!

This is a good topic, I hadn't thought to start one like this, but then, I'm just learning HTML and coding and design etc. I think having to many moving files in a webpage are annoying. Myspace is a perfect example, but then that's user generated content. I think music and repeating jingles are horrible and dark colors, and pages that don't adjust when you full screen them, they still stay in the upper left corner, but I guess not everyone has the best computer for designing like you and I probably do, I've been told that designing for 600 x 800 is still the ideal way to design, which I find limits your design capabilities.

I'm curious though, did you teach yourself all that you know, or did you go to school for it? Do you work entirely from home? Do you do sites with ECommerce? I'm a bit intimidated by those...

I taught myself initially, then took a few design courses at a community college for certification. What I know is self taught however ... the courses were strictly for the papers. Eh ... resolution design can be tricky, but the general rule is to create for 1024 and up, and allow it to be easily viewable in 800 as well. I agree about too much content, especially animated content. My biggest pet peeve is when people think animated backgrounds are "cool looking" ... those annoying, horribly glittery ones that drive you nuts. Thanks for the response :)

Really bright glaring colours put me off in a big way. It's really hard to read the text and i end up copying and pasting it into Word. I do hate music playing too. If i'm surfing the net i usaully have my own Media Player on and i don't want other people's music forced on me. I instantly leave if they do have embedded music.

Oh I've hit sites like that ... or when someone has their text over an extremely active background, not realizing that a simple table or background color would make it so much easier on the visitor. Then I get stuck highlighting the text ... or getting frustrated and leave. Thanks for the response :)

I can't stand those flash movies that start playing and you have to press "skip intro" to avoid. If I wanted to see a movie I would watch one on tv. Music is the second thing I hate. Sites need to have the controls to turn the music off right at the top of the page, not at the bottom where you have to hunt for it. The other thing I hate is transitions. Fading in and out, Blinds...all those things. Just get to the information I am looking for. I heard that you have a bout 3 seconds to get a person to where they want to go in your site or they will go to another. You might try teling people who want all sorts of garbage on their sites that people are not impressed byt those things at all, and that the slower loading speed will lose them meaningful traffic.

Ah, flash intros ... one of the most annoying features of technology. I happen to agree. I don't work with much flash, so there's no chance of me pushing that at my clients, lol. And music that starts on it's own I don't recommend at all, simply because .. well, some of us already have music playing, and the autoplay music can be terribly annoying trying to compete with our own .. and then you get the older computers who simply can't handle the onload and will shut down because of it. Thanks for the response :)

I actually despise drop down menus, and use them as little as possible. There are plenty of ways to organize menu systems without using something so ... amateurish.

I am a website content writer from India. As I work closely with website designers I have certain knowledge on website designing. What annoys me most is the feature where the website desinger haven't kept any "Back" button in the flash files. See some sites like NOkia or Sony Ericssion. Hey, one more thing, which website do you think is the best creative website (visual)? My favourite is http://www.leoburnett.com

Well i am not a professional in the field but still as a lay man i share my views. Pouring colors all over the page and making it guady is as bad as the music non stop. The pages need to be well arranged .As regards sound of any kind i hate and as such i do not want to comment on music and videos. Vertical scrollbar is better. one need to get tempted to visit that site agin for some valid reasons, the visibility and uniqueness. by the by could you please tell me some site where i can have free tutorials on the basics of web designing and html?
