Has Anyone Else Experienced Swelling During Pregnancy?

With my first two pregnancies, I didn't swell at all. I could pretty much eat and drink what I wanted and had no problems whatsoever. A few days ago I noticed that my feet and ankles were really swollen. I attributed that to the bacon and eggs with a Pepsi that I had for breakfast. I kept my feet up for the rest of the day and drank a lot of water before going to bed...and it was noticeably better by the next morning. Today my left ankle, foot, and toes have swollen up like a sausage again; my right is swollen as well, but it is minimal in comparison to my left. Any ideas as to how I can keep the swelling down? I've got two more months to go and can't imagine this being the norm until I give birth.

I have actually heard that swelling is normal, especially the last few months of pregnancy. I'm on my 17 week of being pregnant for the first time so I don't have a whole lot of experience but I've had tons of friends who've had babies here recently. They've all had major swelling in their feet and ankles primarily. I just started this week having swelling in my left ankle/foot. My mom actually works for an OB/GYN and I asked her tonight what I should do about the swelling. She said that the only thing the doctor tells his patients is to elevate their feet. Make sure your feet are above your heart. This is supposed to help with the swelling. I know it's not fun and I'm not as far along as you are. I was sitting watching a movie with my husband the other night and my foot was throbbing because it was so swollen. Anyway, good luck. God Bless.

Don't you hate it that your skin gets so stretched out over your feet and ankles? Mine starts to itch so bad that I can't stand it. And they do throb if I leave them down, so I try to keep them elevated as much as possible. I think my problem is partially due to the fact that I don't get much rest during the day since I am constantly chasing after my two girls. Thank you for your comment and good luck with your pregnancy!!

I swelled so much so with my first that I gained 53 pds and mostly water weight. I would have it checked out if its not going down at all, you dont want to develop pre eclampsia. Keep them propped up as much as you can, I was put on bed rest with my first due to the swelling probably at like 6 months, she said had I not done that I wouldnt have made it so far, not sure what she meant by that. But its normal to have some swelling, just if its not going down like after you have been asleep all night is when I would have it looked at! good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I will definitely check with my doctor this week and see what he says.

I was one of the lucky ones and did not have any swelling. A lot of my friends did though. While they were being yelled at by the Dr. for so much weight gain I was being yelled at for so much weight loss. I have read that salt is not always the culprit. sometimes not enough salt can also cause swelling. 75% of women have this swelling called edema. Here are a few things that may help. Don't wear elastic topped socks or knee-hi pantyhose. Wear comfortable shoes. Slip on types work best. Put your feet up when possible. If you stand at work, try to move around slightly or get a stool to prop a foot up. Try support pantyhose.

Yes I swelled a lot during my pregnancy. It started during my 30th week and lasted 1 week after I gave birth. I ate lots of fiber, drank water every hour, exercised and still my legs, ankle and thighs swelled like a baloon.

ive had 2 kids and the youngest is just 7wks old. i swelled worse with her than i did with my first. it was sooo bad that for 2 months or so i couldnt wear shoes or socks and my feet would go numb. my doctor said to drink LOTS Of water and keep my feet up as much as possible. also laying on your left side helps some, but i couldnt lay around alot because i have a 2yr old that keeps me busy. other than that, he couldnt tell me much to do other than to stay off my feet, which was impossible. good luck, i know exactly how you feel.

I've been trying to watch what I eat and keep my feet up as much as possible; which isn't a whole lot since I'm chasing after a 3 year old and a 2 year old constantly. Its been getting a little better, so I hope it stays manageable for the rest of the pregnancy. Thanks for your comment!!

I have swelled up like a balloon in all 3 of my pregnancies. I had a lot of water weight gain. I put my feet up as much as possible, drank lots of water, no satly food, and if I stood, I used a fot stool to prop one foot up on, I switched feet every 5 minutes or so.
